In a city with such a rich history, as it is supposed to be, you can count more than a dozen interesting architectural sights. All of them are beautiful and worthy of attention, but still, in every constellation there are stars that shine brighter than others. So in the necklace of architectural pearls of Lviv there are some of the most spectacular ones, and one of a group of such particularly distinguished treasures of the city is the building that today bears the name of Lviv House of Scientists.
The House of Scientists is located in the very heart of Lviv — not far from the famous Svobody Avenue on a street with the interesting name «Listopadovy Chin». House No. 6 attracts everyone at once: its luxurious appearance — it is impossible not to notice it when passing by, and stunningly preserved exquisite interiors, which can be referred to the real masterpieces of architectural thought, and a history rich in interesting facts. Everyone who has visited «Eastern Florence» should get acquainted with such an attraction of Lviv as the House of Scientists.
This landmark was built in 1897-1898 as an elite casino, a place for gathering aristocrats from the Lviv club of owners of horse factories. The authors of the project of the construction were the stars of Austro-Hungarian architecture of the XIX century — architects G.Helmer and F.Felner, who gave Lviv also the building of the hotel «Georges» on Prospekt Shevchenko, and Odessa — its magnificent opera, with the Chernivtsi Opera House also on the list of their now Ukrainian-owned achievements. Well, in Europe you can see dozens more beautiful buildings presented by architects to the world. The construction of the current House of Scientists, as well as its design, was carried out by the Austrian architectural bureau «Felner and Helmer», which belonged to the famous architects.
In their work, Gelmer and Felner were inspired by the majestic historical palaces in the Central European Baroque style, and this is how this building turned out: inferior to the palaces in its size, it can nevertheless give a head start to many of them because of its spectacular appearance and breathtaking interiors. The neo-Baroque two-storey house is light, refined, lavishly, but not excessively, as is often the case with palaces, decorated with stucco, sculptures, turrets — but only on the outside: this attraction impresses even more those who get to know its inner beauty.
The interiors of this architectural treasure have been preserved to this day in perfect condition since the house was first opened. The halls and galleries are as luxurious today as they were more than a hundred years ago: carved wood, silk-lined walls, marble fireplaces, crystal chandeliers and plenty of mirrors to accentuate all this splendor. One of the most striking details of the building’s interiors is the carved wooden oak staircase, which is a brilliant architectural solution in terms of beauty and originality. Many impressive pictures open to the guest of the House of Scientists on the second floor as well — there are 8 halls open for viewing, including the White Hall with a fireplace and a grand piano, the Red Hall, the Bezh Hall, the Mirror Hall, the Library with a beautiful gallery, and the Balcony Gallery. Thanks to the perfectly preserved interiors, in addition to ordinary events, such as meetings of the Council of the House of Scientists and conferences, classical music concerts and the famous Lviv balls, the tradition of which dates back to 1482, are held here. The house is also often visited by newlyweds, who want to capture their memorable day surrounded by such incredible beauty.
Anybody can get into the House of Scientists: to do this, one only needs to pass through the left door (if you look at the building from the street side) into the carriage yard (which is also interesting to see) and, before reaching it, go through the door in the archway, where there is a concierge, who is always happy to welcome guests of the city who are interested in the attraction.
The story about the House of Scientists in Lviv can be continued for a long time: in addition to its beauty, it is famous for a number of interesting facts. Here were filmed scenes of the movie «D’Artagnan and the Three Musketeers» (the house was the residence of Cardinal Richelieu), it is also known as a place where in the late XIX — early XX centuries. was a brothel, although this fame is somewhat controversial and scandalous, and also here once gave a concert one of the descendants of Mozart. But the best thing is to get acquainted with such a stunning architectural monument in person — if you are going to spend your holiday in Lviv, be sure to include its visit in your itinerary, and you will be left with a lot of vivid impressions.
