Skadovsk is located in Kherson region of Ukraine 94 km south of Kherson. The town was founded in 1894 as a maritime wharf, from where wheat, wool and karakul were sent to Europe. Before that, there was a small fishing settlement called Ali-Agok («Silent Wharf») on the territory where the resort is located today. For a long time these lands belonged to the landowner S.B. Skadovsky — hence the modern name of the town. It was thanks to Skadovsky’s efforts that the deserted steppe near the shores of Dzharylgach turned into a resort. It was found that the waters of Dzharylgacha Bay contain more salts than sea waters, abound with iodine, hydrogen sulfide and bromine compounds — the concentration of useful substances in Dzharylgacha is higher than in Yalta and Yevpatoria. This makes water procedures effective for treatment of the widest range of diseases: musculoskeletal apparatus, thyroid gland, respiratory tract diseases and nervous diseases. Today there are several dozens of health-improving institutions in Skadovsk, more than 80 thousand people have a rest at the resort every year.
