At the confluence of the steppe and the sea, in the northwest of the Azov coast stretches a small resort town called Genichesk, attracting tourists who want to have a good rest and recovery during the vacation. Today rest in Genichesk is becoming increasingly popular, offering tourists the opportunity to live in beautiful places by the sea, while enjoying all the delights of modern urban infrastructure. Impress the guests of the city and the sights of the city — natural, architectural, historical.
It is a small resort town of Kherson region, located at the northern border of the sandy spit Arabatskaya Strelka, connecting the steppe southeastern part of Ukraine and Krym (the spit reaches the isthmus of Kerch Peninsula). To the left of the city is Lake Sivash, and to the right is the Utlyuk estuary. From Genichesk, Arabatskaya Strelka is separated by the narrow Genic Strait, formed by the straits «Promoina» and «Thin». This peculiarity served as the name of the city: it comes from the Turkic word «Dzhenichke», which translates as «thin strait».
Human exploration of the territories, where the resort town of Genichesk now stretches, began in remote antiquity. In the late Bronze Age nomadic settlers came here, having taken a cozy place on the border of the wild steppe on the seashore next to the salty lake Sivash. Evidence of the most ancient epochs in the history of these places have survived to our time — these are burial mounds of the second half of II — early I millennium BC. And the trace of ancient history of our era is found on the Arabatskaya arrow near the city limestone stele with Sarmatian sign II-III centuries AD. Also under the city are preserved dungeons, the origin of which scientists are still figuring out.
By the time when these lands were considered the southern borders of Russia (after the liberation of the Black Sea region from the Turkish-Tatar domination), the town came in the form of a small settlement — a locality, which is first mentioned in the decree of Catherine II «On the arrangement of new fortifications» from February 10, 1784. Active settlement of the south of Ukraine reached Genichesk — the town began to grow and develop, but still remained, in fact, a peripheral settlement with swamps even on the central street. People were engaged in salt mining in the surrounding estuaries, fishing, farming and cattle breeding. Wars brought disturbing notes to the measured way of life of Genichans — it happened so that it was always a stronghold, a defensive point of Russian troops, which had to carry out its border service. Nevertheless, gradually the remote village blossomed and turned into a cozy town, the status of which it received in 1903.
Today Genichesk is, first of all, a resort town. Its population as of 2011 was about 26 thousand people, which is not much by modern standards. This is one of such places, where in the presence of modern infrastructure is preserved proximity to nature, interesting objects of which (Biryuchy Island, Arabatskaya arrow, etc.) are considered the main attractions of Genichesk, along with its architectural treasures such as the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin and the ruins of the Arabat fortress. Having accommodated in boarding houses, guest houses or vacation homes, tourists have the opportunity to live in close proximity to the natural treasures of the city, which give the most positive emotions. Warm sea, whose waters do not cool down until late fall, beautiful sandy and shell beaches, comfort and all the possibilities of the modern city — rest in Genichesk is remembered by everyone who has been here, for many years.
