High lock

Location: Lviv, St. Vysokiy Zamok, on the skhylahs of Zamkovoi (Prince's) hill.

slopes of Zamkova GoraLocated practically in the center of Lviv, the «High Castle» park rises majestically above the city. From the highest point, at a height of 413 meters above sea level, where the observation deck is now located, a breathtaking panorama of the ancient city and its attractions opens up. Among the medieval architecture, Lviv parks can be seen as green islands.

In the 60-80s of the 19th century from here you could watch the fires of Stryj, which is 70 km from Lviv and Stanislav, now Ivano-Frankivsk, 120 km away.

High CastleThe park itself was designed more than a century and a half ago. Due to its topography, it consists of two terraces. The lower terrace is one of the most beautiful places of the park. It stretches from Kryvonos Street (the central entrance to the park) to Zamkova Street. On the upper terrace in 1869-1900 the mound of the Union of Lublin was built, and after the Second World War the TV tower and the building of the TV center were built next to it.

But many years ago, as the very name «High Castle» testifies, there really was a castle on this mountain. Since the times of Danil Romanovich there was a defense fortress here for a hundred years. In 1340. The princely castle was occupied by the Polish king Casimir III. In addition to its defense value, the castle also served as a prison.

For almost three hundred years no one managed to capture the castle. For the first time in 1648 it was done by the colonel of B.Khmelnitsky’s troops Maxim Krivonos. In 1704 the Swedish king Charles XII occupied «High Castle». Since then it has been gradually destroyed. Only a small fragment of the castle remains.
