Sevastopol is a beautiful city by the sea, a hero-city, a city of military glory, a place where the evidences of long gone epochs have been preserved. Many people dream to visit it, and once they realize their dream, they never forget it. Even if you come to Sevastopol for only a few hours, having made a walking tour around it, you can get acquainted with its main beauties, and after such acquaintance you will definitely want to come back here again and get to know the city better.
Let’s start our journey around the city from the railway station, which is located near the shore of the Southern Bay — we immediately get a beautiful view and the main feature of Sevastopol, in every corner of which there are bays, making it a truly maritime city.
Moored yachts, boats, fishermen — all this immediately creates the right mood and atmosphere. From the station you should take any transport or walk (1.5 km) to Ushakov Square, from where we will start our tour.
Moving from the stop «Ushakov Square» in the direction of the hotel «Ukraine» we find a blue sign «Panorama» and go uphill along the Historical Boulevard — an open-air memorial complex, where all the guests of the city like to walk. On the Historical Boulevard you can visit museums: the panorama «Defense of Sevastopol» and the Museum of the heroic defense and liberation of Sevastopol. Also here you can see the exhibition of guns from the Crimean War, anchors, admire the monuments (to F.F. Ushakov, E.I. Totleben, L.N. Tolstoy). There is also an amusement park here — buy a ticket for the Ferris Wheel and you can see the panorama of the city at once!
Having descended from the Bastion Hill, as Sevastopol residents call it, we will continue to get acquainted with the city, going from Ushakov Square towards the sea along one of the most beautiful streets — Bolshaya Morskaya. This is one of the ancient streets of the city, which at all times was considered fashionable and famous for exquisite establishments. During the war (the first) it was heavily destroyed, then quickly restored, fortunately, a few pre-revolutionary buildings are still preserved: it is the Cathedral of the Intercession 1905g. construction (house number 36), Arch. V. A. Feldman, the building of the Main Street. A. Feldman, the building of the Main Post Office in 1914 in Art Nouveau style (house № 21), the prayer house of the Karaites — Kenassa 1908. built (house № 11). Attract attention and the building of the movie theater «Victory» (№ 13), and the house number 1 of the Central Design Bureau «Chernomorets». Many houses and courtyards on B. Morskaya Street are impressive: erected from white Inkerman stone in the style of Stalinist Art Nouveau, they make the street solemn, but being low, at the same time very cozy.
At Lazarev Square, where Bolshaya Morskaya ends, we turn right to Sverdlov Street, go to Suvorova Street and immediately turn right again. Going straight and we come out to another famous city sight — St. Vladimir’s Cathedral. It is not only an impressive Byzantine architecture building of the middle of XIX century, but also a tomb of great people — the burial place of Russian admirals. The temple can be visited.
From the cathedral we move along Marata Street to Lenina Street. Along Lenin Street — one of the central streets, also cozy and built up with 2-3-storey houses, we come to Nakhimov Square — one of the main squares of the city, where you can see the monument to Nakhimov, a monument in honor of the heroes of the second defense of Sevastopol, a memorial sign to the 200th anniversary of the city. From Nakhimov Square we go down the big grand staircase to the Grafskaya Wharf — the oldest quay of the city. From here you can go by passenger boats to the Northern side (there are interesting sights such as Malakhov Kurgan and Mikhailovsky Fort, which has an amazing museum). Well, we move along the embankment to the left to the monument to the Sunken Ships — the symbol of Sevastopol. Having admired the monument, we go up to the Primorsky Boulevard — a walk along the green heart of the city, as it is called, is a great pleasure for all tourists. Here you can be inspired not only by the Marinist landscapes, but also by the magnificent architecture of the Palace of Childhood and Youth, the Lunacharsky Theater. There are many interesting places on Primorsky Boulevard: here you can visit a dolphinarium, the only marine Aquarium Museum in the country, the Wax Museum.
After getting acquainted with the center of modern Sevastopol, along the Kornilov Embankment we round the picturesque Artillery Bay, admire the Victory Memorial (the monument «Bayonet and Sail») above Cape Khrustalny, impressive with its height of 60m.
The best end of the walk around Sevastopol will be a visit to the National Reserve «Chersonesos Tavrichesky», which is better to get to from the Kornilov Embankment by public transportation.
