It’s hard to believe, but at the end of the XIX century the territory where Primorsky Boulevard is located today had a bad reputation. And it’s all about its history. For a long time, this section of the city was one of the main points of its defense — here was located Nicholas coastal battery Sevastopol fortress, built in 1853-1856gg. In 1856g. The battery was blown up and the sea facade of the city «decorated» piles of ruins, among which at night, as the locals believed, wandered not resting souls of the dead — hence the apprehension, fear towards this place, which was reinforced by the fact that in this dump of stone shacks worked pubs, where dubious personalities gathered. In 1883, the citizens of Sevastopol decided to return this corner of the city a decent face, and the city council appealed to the government with a petition — as a result, the site of the former battery was transferred to the city for the arrangement of the boulevard. Already in 2 years — September 1, 1885 the boulevard was opened! Thanks to the efforts of the hydrotechnical engineer F.N. Erantsev and gardeners M. Zavadsky and R. Eberius, the city acquired one of its most beautiful boulevards, which was destined to remain a favorite place for citizens and tourists.
Not without reason Primorsky Boulevard was called the green heart of Sevastopol: cypresses, thuys, plane trees, chestnuts, olive trees, laurel, flower beds were planted here. The beauty of flora was complemented by marinistic landscapes: here and there terraces with a view of the sea and the North side of the city were laid out. Gradually architectural beauties began to appear here. At first it was a two-storey house in pseudo-Mauritanian style (Arch. Enukyanov), which at different times was a restaurant, yacht club, movie theater (now there is a concert hall and restaurant). Then the building of the Sevastopol Biological Station was constructed, where the only marine aquarium-museum in the country still functions today, as well as the lush and solemn Palace of Childhood and Youth (originally — the Institute of Physical Methods of Treatment) and other structures, always invariably erected in accordance with the fact that Primorsky Boulevard is one of the parade grounds of the city. The development of the boulevard continued throughout the XX century. — As a result, today its beginning from the side of Nakhimov Ave. Nakhimov and the end on the side of the Lunacharsky Theater are decorated with parade passages with staircases, porticoes and Doric colonnades with fountains, and from the noisy city it is separated from the openwork cast grating. In 1905, 10 meters from the embankment appeared the modern symbol of Sevastopol — the monument to the Sunken Ships.
