On the central hill, on the side of the Southern Bay, is located Church of the Apostles Peter and Paul. It surprises with its unusual appearance: as if an ancient Greek temple was transferred from Greece to our Crimea.
The history of this temple is as follows. In 1792 on this place was built one of the first churches of Sevastopol Petropavlovskaya — a small, wooden, rectangular shape. In 1837 during a strong storm the church was destroyed. In its place it was decided to build a new church. The commander-in-chief of the Black Sea Fleet and ports M. P. Lazarev favored the project of a young engineer-lieutenant marine construction part VA Ruleva (1811 — 1881), who planned to build a church in a strictly classical style.
The construction began in 1840 and was finished in 1844. The church looks like an ancient temple, surrounded by a colonnade made of Samatsky limestone on all facades. The main and rear facade is completed with triangular pediments, over which once rose crosses, and today there are only the bases.
At the entrance in the niches were installed sculptures of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, made by F. Pellicchio on the models of the famous Danish sculptor Thorvaldsen.
During the First Defense of Sevastopol the cathedral was badly destroyed: the roof fell through, the walls and columns were spoiled by frequent shrapnel hits. After the war it was rebuilt on the funds of Sevastopol merchants Maximov and Kundyshev-Volodin and re-consecrated on December 17, 1889. A parochial school worked at the church.
During the Great Patriotic War the Peter and Paul Cathedral suffered little damage and was quickly restored. First, the building housed the club trust «Sevastopolstroy», from October 1946 to 1957 here were performances of the theater named after Lunacharsky, and then in the former church opened the City House of Culture. Currently, church services are held in a separate room of the cathedral.
