All Saints Church

On the former city cemetery in Zagorodnaya Balka stands the Church of All Saints — the oldest building in Sevastopol. It was built in 1822 at the expense of Vice-Admiral F. T. Bychensky, who was buried in this church. The church was erected in the classical style: cross-domed in volume with a semi-circular apse in the eastern part. The building is crowned with a drum and a dome. The bell tower of the church is oval, two-tiered, topped with a spire. The western facade is decorated with a triangular pediment, the main entrance is decorated with pilasters, columns were placed at the corners.

During the siege of Sevastopol in 1854 — 1855 the temple was occupied by Turkish and French troops. They stole all the church things and set up a stable here. After the war, the church was restored by merchant Ivan Pikin, it was consecrated October 5, 1859 Archpriest Arseny (Lebedintsev). In 1901 a parochial school was opened.

During the Great Patriotic War the church building survived. Since 1985 the temple was declared an architectural monument, in 1990 — 1995 it was repaired: the roof and dome were re-roofed, the columns were restored, Moscow artists repainted the walls of the temple, iconostasis and several kiosks.

Today in Vsekhsvyatsky temple services are held. People come to worship parts of the holy relics of St. Kuksha the New, pray at the icons, illuminated by the light of the holy unquenchable fire from the Holy Sepulchre. This fire was brought from Jerusalem, and three lamps are lit from it — over the shroud, at the Cross with the Crucifixion and in front of the altar icon of the Mother of God.

The body of the crucified Jesus Christ was buried in a cave near Golgotha. Later, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre was built here, on the site of Christ’s Resurrection, where the main relics are kept: the relics of the Apostles, prophets and the righteous, and a part of the original Holy Cross.

A miraculous phenomenon takes place in the temple every year: on Great Saturday the gracious fire appears. On Good Friday all lights are extinguished in the temple every year, the Orthodox patriarch is unmasked, checking if he has matches or other inflammable objects with him. On Saturday, many pilgrims from different countries gather in the temple and offer prayers in different languages. The Patriarch, having prayed, enters the Kubukliya alone. There is a small hole in the huge dome above the Kubukliya through which daylight enters. Lightning begins to strike into it, clots of energy run through the temple, hitting the walls, they are concentrated in the dome and come down with a gracious fire. From it the patriarch lights bundles of candles — each bundle contains 33 candles according to the number of Christ’s earthly years — and passes them to the temple. All candles and lamps are lit from them, and the temple, gradually filling with light, becomes like a sea of fire. This is a truly exciting and unforgettable sight! The Holy Fire has wonderful properties: in the first 5-10 minutes it does not burn, pilgrims wash their faces and hands with it.
