Evpatoria Local History Museum was established on February 1, 1921 in the former mansion of merchant Y.M. Gelelovich, built in 1912 in the Moorish style and is a monument of architecture and urban planning. On July 30, 1921 the museum opened its exposition to the general public.
The collection of the «Museum of Antiquities» was formed from archeology, numismatics, porcelain, old books and works of art requisitioned from the houses of wealthy residents of the city.
Since 1933, the museum’s profile was defined as local history, which it still is today.
In 1988 the diorama «Landing of Yevpatoria paratroopers on January 5, 1942», created by the honored artist of RSFSR studio of military artists named after Grekov (Moscow) V. B. Tautiev was opened.
In 2000, on Duvanovskaya Street, opposite the museum, under the glass pyramidal dome created archaeological complex «North-Western suburb of the ancient city of Kerkinitida» (V — III centuries BC).
Today the museum has up to 90 thousand units of storage. Every year it is visited by about 70 thousand people, conducted more than 2000 excursions.
