Church of the Assumption and Korniatka Tower against the background of the Dominican Church domeLooking at any ancient city, where you have come for a vacation, you should certainly get acquainted with its shrines — the main temples, representing not only high architectural, but also spiritual value. In such places you can feel a touch of the soul of the city. In the amazing Lviv there are many spiritual cloisters, but one of the oldest among them is Uspenska (Voloshskaya) Church, which once became the ideological center of Ukrainian Orthodoxy. Visiting this temple, you will keep the memory of such an impressive acquaintance forever.

The Church of the Assumption has played the role of the main Orthodox church in Lviv since the distant XVI century. For the long time of its existence it was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt — its fate was as turbulent as the life of the city, but today it, keeping in itself the memory of long gone in the past, seems surprisingly peaceful. Kornyatka TowerThis temple found its life thanks to the activities of the Lviv Stavropigy Brotherhood — the most influential Orthodox community, which played a huge role in the fate of not only the city and its inhabitants, but also the entire country, as its members fought against the oppression of the Ukrainian population by foreigners and forced Catholicization, as well as for the identity of Ukrainian culture.

Before the present church saw the light of day, the city for various reasons lost three of its predecessors, also dedicated to the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary. From them the next monastery inherited two objects, which today make up the whole architectural ensemble with the church — Kornyakt’s Bell Tower, built in 1578, and the Chapel of the Three Saints built in 1591. The church itself was built in 1591-1631 under the direction of three talented architects: Pawel Romanin, Wojciech Kapinos and Ambrosius Blagosklonny, who completed its construction. Together the bell tower, chapel and church form an impressive architectural ensemble in the Italian Renaissance style, each component of which is connected to the other by internal passageways.

Chapel of the Three SaintsThe Kornyakt Bell Tower adjoining the church from the northern side is the oldest part of the architectural ensemble, as well as its two other components, was erected on the funds of a member of the Assumption Brotherhood, a Greek by birth Konstantin Kornyakt, who was a well-known public and cultural figure. He was not the only benefactor of the temple, but his donations were the most significant. The architect of the bell tower was the builder Peter Barbon (he also built for Kornyakt a stone house on pl. Rynok — another landmark of the city), P. Rimlianin participated in its construction. Together they built it not only as a part of the temple complex, but also as a defense tower and observation point — hence the significant height of the building, which amounted to 65m.

The Chapel of the Three Saints (St. Basil the Great, St. Gregory the Theologian and St. John Chrysostom) after the loss of the former church before the construction of the new one for a long time fulfilled its functions. This impressive detail of the whole ensemble is considered one of the treasures of Lviv and its architectural masterpieces due to the fact that since its construction it has not undergone significant changes and because of the amazingly beautiful exterior and interior decoration with stucco from artificial marble and painting with imitation mosaics. altar and stained glass windows of the Church of the AssumptionOnly in 1846-1847 the chapel underwent repair and restoration works, during which a door was cut out in its southern wall, connecting it with the Church of the Assumption.

In the city fortress walls the Church of the Assumption was the only Orthodox church. During its construction, the architects had to solve the extremely difficult problem of fitting the cloister into the very limited space allocated for its construction — hence the feeling of its «squeezing» by neighboring buildings, nevertheless in no way detracting from its architectural value and perfection. For viewing from the outside the church is open on Russkaya Street and Podvalskaya Street. Ending with three domes, it impresses with its beauty, precise proportions, harmony of noble lines and forms, calm rhythms of volumes and planes. three domes of the Church of the Assumption The inner beauty of the temple is also of great value: its interior preserved iconostasis of 1773, paintings of XVII-XVIII centuries, old stained glass windows, made by the famous Ukrainian artist P. Kholodny.

The underground crypts of the Church of the Assumption in Lviv became the resting place of such famous people as Ivan Podkova, the hero of the national liberation struggle of the Moldavian and Ukrainian people (today his ashes are in the Kanev Monastery), K. Kornyakt, the figures of the Assumption Brotherhood Nikolai and Anastasia Krasovsky. The walls of the temple heard the voices of famous preachers, saw a lot of things over the centuries, of which they keep the memory to this day. To visit here means to touch the richest historical heritage of the city, which is embodied by churches of Lviv and its other architectural treasures, which are of great interest to tourists from all over the world.
