Children's railroad

Location: Lviv, Striysky Park, 156 Ivan Franka Street.

Lviv Children's Railroad train

The task to make an interesting attraction for children and adults in the city of lion appeared in early 1948. The initiator of such an entertainment was the regional council. Its construction was undertaken by the then «Dorproekt». The construction was carried out by the people’s way and was very fast. During the construction the remains of the park narrow gauge track were used, exactly through which there were arrows and tracks from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. And on November 8, 1951 the opening of the Lviv Children’s Railway took place.

From the very beginning three stations Komsomolskaya (now Parkovaya), Pionerskaya (Solnechnaya) and Detskiy Gorodok (now defunct) were used. Due to the reconstruction of park Stryjski station Detskiy Gorodok was destroyed and a 650m section of track was dismantled.

Lviv Children's Railway - Parkovaya Station

In my opinion the project of reconstruction of the park was made spontaneously, because even now from the side of Striyska street you can see the remains of the station Detskiy horodok.

LWDD was equipped with one of the best depots, as for children’s railroads, which is still in use today. At the beginning of its history, the railroads had only one steam locomotive type Kch4-027, four wooden passenger cars and three freight cars. In the early 70’s the rolling stock was significantly renewed: the steam locomotive was written off together with all wooden cars, but three diesel locomotives TU3-039, TU3-040 and TU2-087 and four all-metal PAFAWAG cars appeared. In 1989 diesel locomotive TU3-040 became decommissioned, so TU3-039 became the only working representative of this series in Europe. Although on the LWD the diesel locomotive TU2-087 is used most of all. In 2008-2009 . In 2008-2009 LWDD went through hard times due to financial problems and was on the verge of extinction, but the black streak has passed and the road is still in operation today.
