Kiziltashki Monastery

Location: Sudatsky district, village Krasnokam'yanka, St. Krimska, 41

View from the monastery on the Krasnokamensk Valley It is not possible for everyone to describe the beauty and mesmerizing majesty of the mountains of the eastern Crimea. Well, you bet! One view of them takes your breath away and makes you speechless! Look at them, and now imagine that many of these mountains hundreds of centuries ago were coral reefs, lovingly grown at the bottom of the warm, disappeared without a trace of the ancient ocean. Jagged peaks lined the fence, scaring tourists with steep rocky precipices. Soft clouds are pierced by sharp peaks of mountains, in the depths of which mysterious gorges are hidden. Only occasionally do the formidable cliffs part to give way to miniature picturesque valleys.

In this article we will talk about one of such valleys, which is nestled and blossomed at the foot of the rocky ridge «Red Stone». Probably, this name tells you absolutely nothing. But if you translate it into Tatar, you will get Kizil-Tash. In the stone walls of this ridge, near the village of Krasnokamenka, long ago was founded Kiziltashky male monastery. Soviet times shackled the monastery in ideological fetters, and it, as well as many other monasteries and temples in Crimea, for a long time stood with locked doors.

For the restoration of this landmark of Crimea, the authorities have taken up only recently — in 1998. Now residents of the monastery can be called the abbot father Nikon and a few more of his novices. Kiziltash MonasteryEvery year believers from different countries come to this valley chosen by God. Interestingly, the Kiziltash monastery has a rather unusual «neighbor» — a military unit. Therefore, everyone who wants to visit the monastery must show documents. However, this obstacle has never stopped anyone.

Tourists are especially interested in the cave of Stefan Surozhsky, where a miraculous spring is hidden. Yes, yes, you heard right. In the Middle Ages, somewhere in this place stood the summer residence of the archbishop. However, where exactly, scientists and researchers have not yet been able to determine. As for the cave, any «aborigine» will show you the way to it, and on the way he will tell you the story of the healing spring of St. Stephen of Surozhsky.

What we now call a cave, in the Middle Ages was a church that welcomed people regardless of their religion. Today, only the stone foundation, mixed with limestone mortar, reminds us of the past and vanished times. In 1825, a Tatar shepherd, who accidentally wandered into the cave, discovered an icon of the Mother of God. He carefully took the masterpiece written on a blackboard and took it to Plastar, a famous merchant of those times. The latter felt it his duty to hand over the miracle icon to the Theodosia archpriest.

It was this face, placed in the frame of a silver risa, which later «settled» in the church of St. Stephen, attracted to these places an incredible The Holy Cave with the Healing Spring of Stephen of Surozhskynumber of Christians. From now on, on the day of the Dormition of the Theotokos and on the day of St. Nicholas in this attraction of Crimea was solemn and crowded.

Kiziltash monastery appeared a little later, thanks to two devotees — Panteleimon and Andronicus. At the beginning of the XIX century they settled in a cave and built a miniature prayer house out of clay. Soon rumors about the services near the healing spring reached Archbishop Innocent, who in 1856 paid a visit to these mysterious places and consecrated the church of worshipers in the name of Stephen Surozhsky. Wealthy residents of Sudak and Theodosia decided to take the bull by the horns and, taking advantage of the opportunity, appealed to the lord with a tearful request, say, open here, in Kiziltash, kinoviyu. This was the birth of the Kiziltash Monastery of St. Stephen Surozhsky — a mysterious attraction of Ukraine, the fame of which spread echoes around the globe, and maybe even a little further.
