The Pyramids of Cheops — the heritage of Egypt, but the Crimean peninsula also boasts a kind of «pyramid» — Mount Bakatash. The name of this elevation draws in the imagination of many a beautiful and moon-faced Tatar girl. After all, agree, Bakatash sounds proud and singsongy. However, in the end it all turns out to be an auditory deception. In fact, the first part of the word — «baka» — is translated from Crimean Tatar as «frog», and the second part — «tash» — as «rock». Paradoxical, isn’t it! The famous Russian folk tale comes to mind, in which a frog turns into Elena the Beautiful after kissing Ivan-Tsarevich. True, such a trick does not work with the mountain. However, Mount Frog is beautiful as it is.
Baka-Kaya, which is how the Crimean Tatars call Mount Bakatash, «dominates» just above the village of Dachnoye, very close to Sudak. Bakatash has the shape of a pyramid. On its top there is an amazing work of art, which was sculpted by a wind architect — a giant frog. How did it climb up there? Very simply! The wind spent years «honing» the limestone, and that’s what happened. Since then, the rock Frog, sitting on the peak of Mount Bakatash, majestically and attentively looks at the sea surface and the surroundings of the Sudak valley.
The characteristic silhouette of a stone frog, probably, was stored in the memory of everyone who at least once in his life approached Sudak on the Simferopol highway. Yes, Mount Bakatash together with its limestone frog can hardly claim to be a symbol of
Sudak on a par with the Genoese fortress or unique and striking landscapes of the New World, but tourists remember this strange elevation for a long time. People even sarcastically say that the «toad» dominates over the city. But this is just humor and nothing more.
Around Bakatash since ancient times there is a huge number of legends, most of which are some variations on the theme of dzhigit Alim. This is a kind of domestic Robin Hood, who was a threat to the rich and the protector of the local poor. One of the numerous cliffs of Bakatash resembles a young lady dressed in the national Tatar outfit. It is said that this beautiful girl loved dzhigit Alim and secretly met with the robber on the mountain. Once at dawn the beauty decided to climb the rock for the last time in order to meet her beloved and then run away with him to distant lands. But the mother noticed how the naughty daughter was climbing the rock, became angry and cursed her own child in despair. The young moon-faced Tatar turned into a stone and never met her beloved again.
As for this unusual attraction of Crimea, ten years ago, in 2001, representatives of
of the famous group «Stalker», the Sudak Foundation called «Black Sea» and the company «Office-Master-Group» met and conceived an amazing project, according to which with the beginning of each summer season the limestone frog was going to be crowned — literally. Designers and creatives even drafted a huge crown that was supposed to transform an ordinary frog into a Princess. However, unfortunately, this original idea is still in its original status and never turned into reality. And really, who said that it is so easy to make a beauty out of a frog? It looks like this project is really going to take a lot of sweat.
Well, there is really something to see in Sudak: semi-desert landscapes intertwine with shady forests, pandemonium of rocks from above look down on the vineyards glistening and sparkling in the sun…. And these stunning, completely different rocks: Stone Frog, Cock’s Crest, Sugar Loaf…! Is it worth talking about the mountains, which in the past were coral reefs, and about Karadagsky massif, repeatedly sung in poems and paintings! Sudak is a treasure trove of the most original and most exquisite attractions of Ukraine.
