inside the caveOur Earth, as it is known, has existed for a very long time, so you can find many corners on it, keeping secrets and mysteries of the unknown, hidden from us past. One of these mysterious places is located near the capital of Crimea. Archaeologists call it a valuable monument, fans of cave tourism — one of the most interesting objects, and ordinary tourists — mysterious, beautiful, certainly worth visiting the place. We are talking about the Snake Cave — the largest cave among the cavities of the foothills, one of the most beautiful among the largest karst caves in the world.

Snake Cave, or as it is also called, Snake Grotto, Snake hole — is located 10 km from Simferopol, near the villages of Levadki and Chistenkoe, in the steep slope of the Inner Ridge of the Crimean Mountains. Its length is about 310 meters, but locals say that it is even bigger. Don’t be afraid — the cave is called Snake Cave not because snakes live here. Snakes have never lived in this cave, and this name was given to the cave because of its twisted shape. The largest inhabitants of the cave are only bats «big horseshoe», not reaching 20 grams in weight cute dark gray animals, rare and therefore listed in the Red Book. The whole cave is a natural monument, which has been established since 1969.

Snake Cave is of great interest to those who come to rest in Crimea, One of the cavities of the second floor the chance to see a rare phenomenon in nature — a three-storey cave with a history of development of several thousand years is not every day. In addition, the cave is located in a picturesque area, which offers a view of the most famous mountains of the Crimea — Demerdzhi, Boyko, Babugan, Tyrke and others.

The cave was known to man in the VII-VI centuries BC, it was used by the Kizil-Kobins as a family sanctuary, and the Scythians gave the cave the meaning of a pagan temple. Only the walls, which keep the evidence that there was once water in the lower level of the cave, remember the bloody sacrifices of animals and even people made by ancient peoples. People were rarely sacrificed in the cave, only on special occasions, and there are countless animal bones found here.

Entering the cave from the mushroom-shaped entrance, you can immediately see that it consists of three floors. The last one is only partially preserved due to the collapse, but the lower and middle levels can be freely and safely wandered. The passages in the cave are very winding, connecting with each other, forming more free spaces, but it is impossible to get lost here. After 10-15 meters from the entrance the daylight fades, further on there is artificial lighting. Traveling through the mysterious and beautiful corners of the cave, you can meet those very bats, but if you do not wake them up, they will not wake up, so you should not be afraid of them.

Exit with snakeOn the lower level of the cave preserved on the walls of calcite crystals in the rays of lanterns shimmer, creating a magical spectacle, all the colors of the rainbow, but stalactites and stalagmites, even the sound of water droplets here can not be found or heard. Snake Cave is unique in its own way — here you can find fragments of ancient ceramics, bones of once sacrificed animals everywhere in free access.

Traveling to the Snake Cave is a touch to something ancient, even mystical, because for thousands of years here sang the gods of different peoples. Being in this cave you can feel not only the grandeur and richness of the imagination of nature itself, but also the power of eternity itself, to be charged with this calm and powerful energy and gain pleasant impressions for many years. Now you know that the sights of Simferopol are not only beautiful mansions and streets, they are also natural monuments, which were first visited by man thousands of years ago.
