The history of this theater began in the 20s of the XVIII century. This is the oldest theater on the Crimean peninsula, the oldest on the territory of Ukraine.
The founder of the theater was a Moscow merchant Volkov — a great theatergoer, who was recommended to move to Krym by doctors. At the House of the Noble Assembly he rented a barn, in which visitors left their horses. In this barn were arranged stage, parterre, boxes.
Later the theater was repeatedly rebuilt, and in 1873 was dismantled, on the site was built a new theater building. The modern building was built in 1911.

So, during World War II, when Simferopol was occupied, in the theater was created underground group «Sokol». These people became heroes not only on stage, but also in life. Actors and employees of the theater supported the partisans, conducted reconnaissance work, created a cache in which they hid a large collection of theatrical costumes (about 5 thousand), which planned to take out the Germans. By a tragic coincidence of circumstances on the trail of the group «Falcon» Germans attacked three days before the liberation of Simferopol, all who were part of it shot. The Nazis set fire to the theater before retreating, but saved the costumer and the worker saved the theater. Based on this tragic story, the theater staged the play «They Were Actors», which was later made into a film of the same name.
