Location: Simferopol, St. Yaltinska, 2

Pallas ManorSalgirka Park in Simferopol is among the most visited sights of the city. However, not only magnificent nature, floral fragrances and two hundred years old trees planted by the founders of the city attract its residents and guests here — Salgirka has preserved several magnificent architectural monuments, one of which is the estate of the famous academician P.S. Pallas.

Peter Simon Pallas — German scientist, naturalist, traveler and geographer, for whom the Crimean peninsula became a second homeland. The works that made Pallas famous were devoted to the study and description of the unique Crimean nature. Works about the Crimea became the peak of his scientific creativity. And many people even today say that in the study of the nature of the Crimea Pallas could not be bypassed by anyone, as in the artistic description of the nature of the peninsula, no one can bypass A.S. Pushkin.

The estate on the left bank of the Salgir River, where Pallas lived from 1795 to 1810, was named by his master Karolinovka — in honor of his wife. The purchase of the plot in 1795 and the construction of Karolinovka began the history of the Salgirka Park — Pallas was the first to take a liking to the picturesque corner of nature not far from the city.

The spacious Pallas’ house was built in the architectural Bakhchisarai or Little Turkish style, it was surrounded by stone walls on three sides, and the front entrance had a stone plinth with a wooden balustrade. Over time, the one-story building with a bright orange tiled roof and interesting thin high pinnacles made of white limestone was supplemented with a household building and several wings. And the scientist laid out a magnificent garden near the house, where he brought rare and beautiful plants. The whole complex of buildings of the estate has survived to our days almost unchanged. Only the next owner of Karolinovka, N.F. Naryshkina, carried out minor alterations here, giving the manor characteristic for the manor architecture of that time.

Guests of Pallas’s estate during the period when the academician lived and worked here, Main gate of the estate were many famous scientists of that time and distinguished guests of the city. Having visited Pallas, one of his contemporaries wrote: «The presence of this glorious husband, settled within the walls of this city, seems to herald the dawn of its future enlightenment». For many years Karolinovka became the center of spiritual life of Simferopol. The scientist kept here his collection of rare prints and paintings, unique herbariums, archaeological and geological collections, as well as the richest library.

In 1810 Pallas left Crimea and went to Berlin, but his wife did not want to leave these lands, until 1824 she was the owner of the Pallas estate, then its mistress became N.F. Naryshkina.

This historical and architectural monument survived to our time almost in its original form. As the historian O.I. Dombrovsky wrote about the estate, «despite the fact that it is not palace architecture, the estate is a rare phenomenon, illustrates the spirit of its time». And today, walking along the picturesque sightseeing SimferopolSalgirka Park, any guest of the city, who came on holiday in Crimea, can see this manor shrouded in greenery with two hundred years of history and a rich past.
