Simferopol railway station

Location: Simferopol, St. Gorky, 5

Railway StationThe main «gateway» of Crimea is Simferopol Railway Station, and it is here that most tourists who come to the peninsula for a vacation first come. Railway stations always have a certain romance, but Simferopol station has a special atmosphere due to its unique architectural structure and unique beauty.

This station is the first place visited by tourists who want to see the sights of Simferopol, as it is one of the main attractions of the city and the entire peninsula Crimea. In addition, this structure is among the most beautiful architectural structures in Ukraine.

The first train arrived at Simferopol station on October 14, 1874, but much has changed since then. During World War II, the station was destroyed and the construction of a new building was taken up by one of the main representatives of Stalinist architecture — Alexander Nikolaevich Dushkin.

All works, in which German prisoners of war took part, were completed in 1951. Dushkin created not just a train station, but a new landmark, one of the most beautiful buildings in the country.

The main material used in the construction of the station was Inkerman stone. Italian architectural style was taken as a basis. It is known that even the Italians themselves were amazed by the style similarity of the station building and said that after visiting Simferopol, they felt at home.

Notable features of the Simferopol railway station are the station clock tower, bas-reliefs in the main lobby, as well as a hidden attraction of the city.

The clock tower is called the calling card of Crimea. It is a one-of-a-kind clock tower characterized not only by its huge size, but also by its internal structure.

The tower has a height of 42 meters, each of the four dials on its top has a diameter of 3 meters, the length of hour hands — 1.5 meters, Station clock towerand minute hands — 2 meters. The pattern of the dial itself is also interesting: opposite each number are the signs of the Zodiac, each of which is more than a meter in size. It is still a mystery for what reason the sequence of Zodiac signs was broken and the signs of Virgo, Libra and Taurus — the symbol of Ukraine — were excluded. And why the constellations of Swan, Serpent and Hound Dog were added instead.

As for the internal structure of the tower, it has no analogues: an artesian well is made inside the tower, a tank is raised to the height, which is constantly filled with clean water from the bowels of the earth.

Climbing the station tower you can get acquainted with one of the camouflaged attractions of Simferopol — an ancient temple. This temple can only be seen from the tower or from the air. The building of the Simferopol railway station is crowned by an exact copy of the ancient temple, with inherent snow-white columns and all other characteristic features of temple architecture.

In the main lobby of the station you can see stucco bas-reliefs, which depict famous figures: Marx, Engels, Lenin, military leaders M. Kutuzov, Bogdan Khmelnitsky, A. Suvorov, P. Nakhimov, writers A. Pushkin, L. Tolstoy, T. Shevchenko, A. Gorky, scientists M. Lomonosov, D. Mendeleev, I. Michurin, I. Pavlov. Until the Khrushchev times one could also see the bas-relief of Stalin here, but it was dismantled from here, as well as from the monument — the bench where he sat with Lenin.

The history of the station and history of Simferopol are closely linked. What happened to the station reflected the fate of the city at certain historical moments. Now, after the restoration carried out in 1999, Simferopol railway station is one of the most beautiful buildings in the country, just as Simferopol is one of the most attractive and beautiful cities in Crimea.
