LandscapeMany tourists and vacationers know Simferopol only as a city from which they begin their acquaintance and vacation in Crimea. However, not everyone knows that this wonderful city and its surroundings, have a unique combination of historical and natural attractions. The sights of Simferopol create an unparalleled bright atmosphere. All of them are unique and distinctive. One of the most famous is the Simferopol Art Museum. It was founded in 1922, at a time when the Central Museum of Tauris had an art department. The collection of the art department was replenished with works from palaces, mansions and villas of the South Coast of Crimea. The museum kept decorative and applied arts: porcelain, furniture, antique crystal, and carpets.

Receipts from the Central Museum Fund of Moscow, as well as the Tretyakov Gallery and the Russian Museum replenished the collection of the Simferopol Museum. And in 1927 it already had 1871 exhibits.

In 1937, the art department of the Central Museum of Tauris was repurposed into the Simferopol Regional Gallery. And on November 8 of the same year, its opening took place.

Most of the collection of the Simferopol gallery was lost during the Great Patriotic War during the attack of enemy aircraft on the Kerch port. Another part of the collection was safely delivered to Yerevan, and after the end of the war the collection was moved to Simferopol. During 1945 — 1947 the destroyed building of Simferopol gallery was restored. Today it has the appearance of the times of the post-war renovation, apart from some changes.

The art gallery was reopened in 1947. Its new collection was completed with works that were transferred by the central museums of the country.

In 1966, the gallery received a new name Simferopol Art Museum. To date, the museum has 77 works that have survived from the pre-war collection.

The collections of today’s Simferopol Art Museum have high artistic value and Portrait are of considerable interest. At the beginning of the exposition are icons of the Moscow school, landscapes and portraits. The creativity of artists is represented by the works of I.E. Repin, N.A. Yaroshenko. Also attracting special attention are large monographic collections of artists whose life and work are associated with Crimea.

At the present time in the funds of the Simferopol Art Museum is about 9 thousand works of art. Unfortunately, as a result of improper storage, a significant part of these works are infected with fungus and many paintings need serious restoration. To date, major restoration work is underway.
