Fire Safety Directorate in Lviv region (Museum Fire and Technical Exhibition)

It is located in the premises of a unique architectural monument — the former building of the fire station of Lviv. The house was built in neo-Romanesque style in 1901 according to the project of the famous architect I.Brunek. The walls of the building, made of time-darkened bricks, harmonize beautifully with the high red roof and trim. The facade of the building is decorated with a beautiful sculpture depicting St. Florian.

According to legend, Florian was born in the year 250 in Lower Austria. He served under the Roman emperors Maximian and Diocletian. He performed many military feats and secretly converted to Christianity. He was executed by the Roman governor Aquilian on May 4, 304 for attempting to save several dozen Christians from death. St. Florian is the patron saint of firefighters. He is believed to help with gale force winds, droughts, soil infertility and fires. May 4 is the Day of St. Florian the Martyr. In Croatia, the annual celebration of Croatian firefighters is celebrated on this day. The sculpture of St. Florian was created in 1906 by sculptor P. Vojtović.

The exposition of the fire-technical exhibition is located in three halls. Unique exhibits of the exhibition familiarize numerous visitors with samples of modern and ancient fire equipment, fascinating history of firefighting in Lviv. Here you can see how the fire and rescue service of ancient Lviv developed over the centuries.

The exhibits of the first hall tell about the history of firefighting in Western Ukraine and Galicia. Here you can see a large number of documents, photos and equipment with the help of which brave firefighters fought against the destructive power of fire in the past centuries.

Visitors are told what measures should be taken to prevent disaster and how to eliminate it. Of particular interest are the models of structures and tools of firefighters. All this gives an opportunity to form a full impression of the professional activity of the fire and rescue service of Lviv region.

The third hall of the exhibition was opened for the 20th anniversary of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The hall presents various evidences of the biggest technogenic catastrophe that occurred in the world. Here you can see documents, photos and samples of children’s art. Among the exhibits of the hall are materials telling about the fate of three hundred Lviv firefighters who took part in the liquidation of the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster.
