Location: Lviv, St. Pekarska, 52.

open courtyard-courdonerThe sights of Lviv are diverse — they include temples and churches belonging to different denominations, lavish luxurious palaces, private houses that make up picturesque compositions of cozy European streets, monumental public buildings — theaters and museums, and buildings of various educational institutions. One of the brightest architectural gems among the latter is the complex of Medical University, which everyone who spends his vacation in Lviv is eager to see.

It is impossible not to pay attention to the complex of buildings of the Medical University, being on Pekarska Street — it is the architectural dominant of the street. Built in the late XIX century, the main buildings of the University are included in the list of the most beautiful sights of the city, and therefore it is worth seeing them for everyone who came on vacation in Lviv.

pharmacology buildingLviv National Medical University named after Danylo Halytskyi. Danylo Halytskyi was founded in 1784 and today it is one of the oldest and largest medical schools in the country. Its history dates back to 1661, when King Jan Kazimir transformed the Jesuit College of Lviv into an academy and gave it the title of a university, one of the four faculties of which was the Medical University. In 1773 this university was closed, but the next year Austrian Emperor Joseph II signed a patent on its restoration, and on November 16, 1784 students of medicine listened to their first lecture. This is considered to be the date of foundation of Lviv Medical University.

The construction of the buildings of the University, which was decided to build in the picturesque eastern suburb of the city, lasted from 1891 to 1898 years, the author of the project of the building was the architect J. Braunzeys. hygiene buildingAs in the late 19th century, today the university is surrounded by a park, and in the courtyard between the buildings there is an abundance of greenery, which makes the old buildings, made in the style of historicism (neo-Renaissance), even more romantic and impressive. Three buildings (anatomy, hygiene and pharmacology) and an open courtyard-courdoner create a unified ensemble. The anatomy building is turned to Pekarskaya Street with its front facade, to the left and right of it symmetrically, with the main facades facing each other, are the buildings of pharmacology and hygiene, with their end facades turned to the street. The three buildings are composed in the form of the letter «P» and are made of bricks covered with plaster on top, all three are two-storey with a high basement and tiled roofs.

anatomy buildingThe central part of the architectural ensemble of Lviv Medical University is the anatomy building. Its construction was completed in 1892. As in the whole composition, the architecture of the main building is light, graceful, the low building seems very beautiful, although its lines are simple, and the decor is very restrained and modest. Only between the high arched windows of the second floor of the central part of the facade are outlines of Ionic pilasters (semi-columns), which always give buildings solemnity and elegance.

The interiors of Lviv Medical University are also noteworthy: in the main building the grand staircase is impressive, and all lecture halls are made in the form of an amphitheater. Every guest of this place will also be interested in visiting the museums: there are anatomical, judicial-medical and human diseases museums with more than 2.5 thousand unique exhibits.

Monument to medics who died in the warThe beauty of this sight is not in the lush forms and bright details — but in the atmosphere that is felt in the courtyard of the ensemble, in the center of which a monument to medics who died during the Second World War was erected in 1975, designed by architect A. Ogranovich and sculptor P. Skorniak. The calm atmosphere allows you to enjoy, although simple, but spectacular ensemble, which seems very cozy. It is one of the oldest universities in Europe, and this is felt in its mood and interiors. It is one of those places that you remember for a long time and want to return to. However, to understand how this monument architecture of Lviv will be remembered by you, you need to visit it.
