Lychakiv cemetery is one of the most majestic and pompous European necropolises, founded in 1786. Here from the first years of its foundation were buried famous, noble, rich people — figures of culture, art, science and the entire political and administrative elite of the capital of the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria.
The first burials were carried out on the territory of modern fields Nos. 6, 7, 9, 10, 14. The oldest tombstone, dated 1675, has been preserved here. At the beginning of the XVI century there was a cemetery of the destitute here.
The Lychakiv cemetery, which was turned into a park in the middle of the XIX century, gradually became a kind of open-air museum of gravestone sculpture and architecture of small forms. Necropolis is a valuable monument of garden and park art, on the territory of which one can feel the unity of man and nature, historical tradition, cult of ancestors, nostalgia.
Now it is a museum on the territory of more than 42 hectares and a tomb where more than 400 thousand people are buried.
On its territory there are works of sculpture and architecture by famous masters: Hartmann Witwer, Shimzer brothers, Pavel Eutelier, Henryk Perier, Julian Markovsky, Ivan Levinsky, Grigory Kuznevich, Sergiy Litvinenok, Eugene Dzindra, Theodosia Bryzh, Yakov Chayka, Emmanuel Misk and others.
Masterpieces, which came out from under their carving, decorate the graves of people of different nationalities — Ukrainians, Poles, Austrians, Germans, Armenians and many other representatives of different Christian denominations and religions.
There are also graves of such famous people as Ivan Franko, Markiyan Shashkevich, Maria Konopnitskaya, Ivan Kripyakevich, Iryna Wilde, Igor Bilozir, Viktor Chukarin and others. The famous Ukrainian journalist Hryhoriy Gongadze is also buried in Lychakiv cemetery. However, the most popular place in Lychakiv cemetery remains the grave of the bishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, miracle worker Mykola Chernetsky. There are always candles burning on it, always fresh flowers. People believe that by visiting the miracle worker, one can be healed. Some come to the tomb to ask for help, to get hope.
In order not to lose the history of this landmark, excursions are often held here. Popular among tourists are also night visits to «Lychakiv Cemetery» — wide light alleys are immersed in a special atmosphere, as if reminding that at such times you should behave with restraint and do not disturb the peace of the place.
