I. Frank Lviv University. I. FrankArchitectural sights of Lviv, which impress tourists who came to Lviv on vacation, are a variety of buildings: both ordinary houses and palaces that belonged to noble citizens, as well as religious buildings and public buildings, including educational institutions. Among the latter, the most famous architectural monuments are Lviv Polytechnic, the complex of buildings of the Medical University and, of course, the majestic building of Lviv Frank University.

Walking through the center of Lviv cozy old streets, you can get bright impressions because of the beautiful architecture, reminiscent of the royal and imperial times that lasted in the life of the city for several centuries. One of such reminders is the grandiose building on Universitetskaya Street. Today it is the main building of one of the oldest universities in Eastern Europe and the oldest university in the country — Lviv National Frank University. Monumental, large-scale, solemn, it attracts and captures attention — you want to admire it, enjoy the elegance of forms and proportions, once again admiring the talent and imagination of the architects of past eras.

main entrance to the universityThe main facade of the university building faces Frank Park — another famous city landmark, also favored by tourists and loved by citizens. The three-story structure was built from 1877 to 1881 for the Regional Sejm of Galicia and Lodomeria (Parliament of the Kingdom). 30 works were submitted to the competition of projects for the Sejm of Galicia, but none of them was approved, and the task was entrusted to the director of the city building government, the outstanding Polish architect Juliusz Hochberger. He managed to develop a project that was immediately recognized as having perfect planning and the most beautiful architectural decoration. In addition to this building, Hochberger gave Lviv many other impressive buildings for educational, financial and administrative purposes, but the Sejm building was the crowning achievement of his work in «East Florence», as Lviv is often called because of the beauty of its architectural appearance.

The building for the Sejm of Galicia was built in the style of the Viennese Renaissance, characterized by a return to ancient art. This is clearly evidenced by such elements of the building as a massive central risalite with Corinthian order columns and complementary sculptural allegorical compositions on the left and right «Labor» and «Education», created by the famous sculptor T. Rieger. facade of I. Frank Lviv UniversityOn the attic in the central part of the building you can see another sculpture created by this master, called «Trustee Spirit of Galicia» and depicting «Galicia», «Dniester» and «Vistula». The pediment of the building is decorated with the inscription «Patriae decori civibus educandis», which is the motto of Lviv University («Educated citizens are the decoration of the Motherland»), to which the building was transferred in 1920. Another interesting detail of the exterior design is the memorial plaques that appeared on the facade in the 1990s, dedicated to outstanding graduates and teachers of the University (mineralogist A. Lazarenko, mathematicians M. Zaritsky, V. Levitsky, M. Tchaikovsky, and other scientists).

During the decades of work Lviv University has graduated a lot of figures who became famous in the scientific and not only in the world. Among other famous names are S. Banach, I. Franko, M. Hrushevsky, Y. Golovatsky, I. Blind and many others. Founded in 1661, for several centuries the University has established itself as one of the most prestigious institutions of higher education in the country and even in Europe. Today it continues to train highly qualified specialists, and the building of I. Frank Lviv University remains one of the most beautiful sights of Lviv.
