Dominican Church

Dominican CathedralLocated on the modern Museum Square, the Dominican Church is one of the most significant monuments of Baroque architecture in the city. Its history has its roots in the distant past. According to the monastery chronicles, the first Dominican monks (members of the Catholic monastic order) appeared at the foot of the «High Castle» back in 1234. The first structure of the Dominican Church and monastery was erected in Lviv in 1370-1375 in the Gothic style.

In the middle of the 13th century it had to be demolished, and in 1745 the construction of a new church began according to the project of architect Jan de Witte. Pototsky. By 1764 the church was almost completed.

The new building was built in the late Baroque style. On the facade was placed the emblem of the Dominicans — a dog lying on a book, holding a flaming torch in its teeth. The church is magnified by a huge elliptical dome, which is supported by eight pairs of powerful twin columns. On the pediment (facade) there are sculptures of saints. The interior of the church is decorated with stone and alabaster tombstones, and the magnificent altar is decorated with four figures of apostles. Dominican Church in the Evening The church is adjoined by the monastery cells building (the monks’ dwelling in the monastery). The tower-bell tower was built in 1865 by the project of J. Zakharevich.

During the Soviet times, since 1972, the church housed the Museum of History of Religion and Atheism. In the modern building of the Dominican Monastery there is the Museum of the History of Religion. In the church there is a Church of the Most Holy Eucharist, belonging to the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.
