Cape Chameleon

Location: near Koktebel, between Quiet and Dead Bays
How to Get There: Walking will not only strengthen your health, but also give you unforgettable impressions of the surrounding scenery.

Cape Chameleon on the background of Karadag and KoktebelThe country of blue peaks, that is the village of Koktebel, without a second’s doubt, can be called the most stunning and the most picturesque Crimean corner. Probably, after that all other Crimean corners will take offense at us, but what can you do, if you can’t take your eyes off the landscape surrounding the Land of Cognacs for a second — it is very magical and alluring. We must admit that Koktebel is incredibly lucky with the place of dislocation — it is nestled in the heart of the Eastern Crimea. Harmony here can be traced in everything — in the warm relationship between the sea surface and the horizon, in the friendly glances that throw at each other Chameleon Cape and the famous Karadag, as well as in the perfect combination of unique historical and natural sights — both of them in Koktebel simply can’t be counted!

You do realize that Koktebel was dubbed the Land of Blue Peaks for a reason. There is, however, in this poetic nickname one small inaccuracy: the matter is that those peaks, which fifteen minutes ago were blue, in a flash turn into pink, and twenty minutes later are colored in shades of brown — and so twenty-four hours a day long. The most convenient way to observe this colorful extravaganza is to look at Cape Chameleon, whose «face» for many millennia is directed far into the sea, and «tail» meanwhile feels great on land. Cape Chameleon in blue-pink colors Rest in Koktebel, which is harmoniously intertwined with this magical play of colors reflected on the back of Cape Chameleon, is unlikely to leave anyone indifferent. The sight is truly unforgettable! However, all these general phrases even ten percent are not able to convey the beauty, which by the dictates of Nature is awarded to Koktebel from birth.

But let’s not go deep into demagogy, and tell about everything in order. So, the cape Toprakh-kaya, known today under the name of Chameleon. The ancient name of this «multicolored lizard» translates as «Clay Rock». If you pick up an old map, for example, of the sixties or seventies, you will suddenly find that the Chameleon on it is depicted quite «well-fed» — wide and large. In reality, this «tricky» cape is quite narrow and has a high ridge. Do you think the Soviet cartographers went a bit overboard? But no. Just Cape Chameleon really noticeably «lost weight», because the sea is eroding it more and more every year. This process does not stop for a second. It is quite possible that our great-grandchildren will not be able to see this landmark of the Crimea, because the cape will disappear from the face of the earth. Well, this is another reason to go to Koktebel and get acquainted with Chameleon personally, if you, of course, have not had time to do it yet.

Cape Chameleon between Dead and Quiet Bays Cape Chameleon «sunbathes» under the Crimean sun between two picturesque bays — Quiet and Dead. The first of them is dotted with tents in summer, but the second one is slightly afraid of tourists — because of the name, and for nothing. This bay is called Dead because both in rain and in thunderstorm there is dead silence here, and the sea is much calmer than usual. As for our multicolored friend Chameleon, it seems to be absolutely satisfied with this neighborhood. By the way, during the day Cape Toprakh-kaya is able to change its color up to twenty times depending on weather conditions and how favorable the sun is to it today. In the clear morning the «back» of the Chameleon shows tourists its blue-colored sides, and in the evening — after a good portion of tan — the Chameleon takes the form of a bright golden giant lizard. The Cape Chameleon prefers to meet the sunset in dark purple, but for dawn he chose a more cheerful outfit — pinkish-purple. This attraction of Ukraine has no analogues in our country. And what analogues can there be, if we are talking about the real magic — otherwise you can’t say.
