The Church of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is one of the oldest Greek temples in Theodosia, it was built in the Middle Ages. Scientists date the time of the foundation of the temple VIII-IX centuries. It was consecrated in honor of one of the main events in the history of Christianity — the Entry into the Temple of the Blessed Virgin.
In 1854, a large extension was made to the ancient Church of the Presentation.
Bishop Hermogenes, who visited Theodosia, left a description of this church: «The altar is small with three arches and one window. The altar is on four stone pillars with a marble top board, on the sides between the pillars are depicted: on the eastern side — the resurrection of Lazarus, on the western side — the Resurrection of Christ, on the northern side — the removal of the Savior from the cross, on the southern side — the crucifixion on the cross. The iconostasis in Byzantine style was arranged as early as 1776, but in 1882 it was ceded to the prison church and replaced by a new one. Above the royal gates — a glow, around which imposed wooden letters inscription: «With the fear of God and faith and love come».
The service in the temple was conducted in Greek and Russian languages. The temple was small, but very beautiful: above the entrance there was a snow-white bell tower, the dome was decorated with colored glass. In the courtyard of the temple was built a house for the priest and a four-class elementary school, above the entrance of which was inscribed: «Eliniko skolio» (Greek school).
In Vvedensky church served the martyr Bartholomew Ratnykh (1894-1938).
In the 30s Vvedensky church was closed and badly disfigured: elegant stone carvings decorating the altar were knocked down, frescoes were painted over, the dome was demolished, the bell tower was destroyed. The building of the former church was turned into a gymnasium.
In 1993, part of the church was returned to the believers, but part of it was still a gymnasium where martial arts were taught. The church needed repairs. Parishioners washed the floors, whitewashed the walls and vaults, installed a temporary iconostasis. It is difficult to establish how the temple looked before, what was its interior decoration — there are no surviving photos of its appearance. But it was simply necessary to restore the dome and the bell tower.
This was helped by the cooperative «Communalnik» and the management of Feodosia Commercial Sea Port, which donated building materials and a heating unit to the church. December 4, 1993 in the temple served the first service.
Gradually improved the ancient church, again became like a house of God. Again over the entrance erected a snow-white bell tower, installed a cross on the dome, enclosed the temple with a fence. Replaced the temporary iconostasis, it was painted by the rector of the temple, Father Alexander Vinnik. He graduated from the Kharkov Art School, then Odessa Theological Seminary, served in Svyatoj-Ekaterinsky Church and Kazansky Cathedral, and now is the rector of the Vvedenskaya Church.
