The one-story house on Galereinaya Street, 10 in Feodosia is known to millions of residents of our country. In this house, built in the early 1900s, Alexander Stepanovich Grin (real surname Grinevsky) lived from September 1924 to April 1929 in the period of his creative maturity. He created here the famous novels: «The Golden Chain», «Running on Waves», «The Road to Nowhere», «Jesse and Morgiana» and a number of highly artistic short stories: «Let’s Sit on the Shore», «The Return», «Fandango», «Six Matches», «Elda and Agotea» and others.
On the eve of the 90th anniversary of the Russian Soviet romantic writer, July 9, 1970, was opened Literary Memorial Museum of L. S. Grin.
A group of artists headed by Savva Grigorievich Brodsky, Honored Artist of the RSFSR, author of illustrations for the six-volume collection of L. S. Grin’s works, created a museum-ship, on which the reader takes a fascinating journey through the country of Greenland. The museum-ship corresponds to the maritime, romantic character of the writer’s works.
Everyone approaching the museum from the sea side is greeted by a pictorial and sculptural panel on the facade of the building — Grinov’s «Brigantine» (installed in 1981) — as a harbinger of his bright and kind world, so necessary for people.
The exposition is located in eight rooms: «Greenlandia», «Frigate’s hold», «Cabin of wanderings» introduce us to the world of Grin’s artistic images, introduce us to the childhood and youth of Sasha Grinevsky; «Clipper», «Rostalnaya», «Captain Geza’s cabin», «Ship’s library» reveal the creative path of the writer, Petrograd and Crimean periods of his life. The workroom has been restored in a memorial form. The museum keeps personal belongings of A.S. Grin, his books, handwritten pages of unfinished novels «The Unwilling» and «The King of Flies», autographs, copies of manuscripts, memoirs of contemporaries. The exposition presents a unique collection of A. Grin’s works published in the languages of many nations of the world.
In September 1986 two new exposition halls were opened, reflecting the theme «Grin is our contemporary».
The museum’s holdings include more than 5 thousand original exhibits.
Numerous admirers of the writer’s work come and visit the museum, and then bring their children and grandchildren to relive the captivating moments of their youth. Young people: students, schoolchildren, even kindergarten students are frequent guests at the museum. They are not indifferent to its unusual design, vivid imagery, life-affirming pathos of Alexander Grin’s creative work, aimed at glorifying goodness, beauty and dreams.
