On Zhupanatska Square, the attention of tourists and guests of ancient Uzhgorod is attracted by a two-storey p-shaped building. Here, in the building of the former Uzhgorod zhupanat (mayor’s or governor’s residence) is the Zakarpattya Regional Art Museum named after Josip Bokshay.
Once this house occupied a leading role in the life of the city. Its premises were used not only for administrative functions, but also for receptions, balls and meetings. In 1878, the work of the telephone was demonstrated here, and in 1919, a meeting of the Central Russian People’s Rada was held, at which it was decided to annex Transcarpathia to Czechoslovakia. Since the same year the zhupanat became the residence of the governor of Podkarpackie Rus.
In 1979, the Transcarpathian Regional Art Museum, which was opened in 1945 and occupied several rooms in Uzhgorod Castle, moved into this building. It contains the best collections of Russian, Ukrainian and Western European art. The department of Russian art is represented by the great Russian artists of the late XIX — early XX century: O. Kiprensky, V. Tropinin, I. Shishkin, I. Aivazovsky. 
The works of T. Shevchenko, A. Murashko, S. Vasilkovsky, K. Grutovsky should be emphasized among the Ukrainian art. A significant part of the exposition is devoted to the works of Transcarpathian masters J. Bokshaya, F. Manay. Bokshaya, F. Manail, E. Kontratovich, G. Gluk and others.
Foreign art is represented by the works of outstanding artists of Central and Western Europe. These are representative of the Dutch revival Lambert Lombart, French romanticism Vernet Claude Joseph, Italian classicism Albani Francesco, early Dutch realism Jacopo Palma. In 1963 the museum opened a hall of icon painting of the XVII-XVIII centuries.
In 1990 the museum was named after the great Ukrainian artist, founder of the Union of Artists of Podkarpackie Ukraine, corresponding member of the Academy of Arts of the SRSR Yosif Yosifovich Bokshay. He painted many temples in Zakarpattya, Hungary and Slovakia, in particular, the Cathedral of Uzhgorod.
To date, the museum’s funds have more than 5 thousand exhibits. The collections are constantly replenished with new works. Various exhibitions are regularly held here. The museum is open daily from 10.00 to 14.00, except Monday.
