Uzhgorod Castle

Location: Uzhgorod

Main building of Uzhgorod CastleThe ancient Uzhgorod Castle rises majestically above the city around it. Being the most valuable historical and architectural monument of Zakarpattya, it attracts a huge number of tourists.

The history of the castle has its roots in the distant past. Archaeological research has shown that on this place in the VIII-IX centuries were fortifications of East Slavic tribes. As we have already written in the article about Uzhgorod, in the X century the fortress was the residence of the Old Russian prince Laborets, then for almost four centuries the castle belonged to the Italian counts Druget.

For its existence Uzhgorod Castle was repeatedly rebuilt and underwent many changes, and only by the end of the XVII century. practically tried the modern form.
The castle has the shape of an irregular quadrangle with bastions at the corners, the height of which reaches 10-15 meters. On three sides it was surrounded by a deep moat and fortress walls, and on the fourth side — a steep cliff. Moat and fortress wall The main body of the castle is a massive three-storey building, on the facade of which is carved a bas-relief (a type of sculpture in which the convex image protrudes above the background plane by no more than half of the volume) with four thrushes — the coat of arms of the counts of Drugetov. It was under their rule that a considerable part of the castle fortifications was built. In the defense system of the castle the main body occupied a dominant position. Even if the enemy penetrated through the outer fortification, thanks to the moats surrounding the castle on three sides, the castle could be defended further. In the middle of the castle there is a courtyard with a 30-meter well carved into the rock. The main building is built in Renaissance style, with four corner towers. In the dungeon of this building there are underground casemates where the inhabitants of the castle hid during the siege. There was also a prison here, along with a torture chamber. There are secret passages in the walls of the castle, which in some places are 2-3 meters thick.

In the XVIII century Uzhgorod Castle lost its importance as a defense fortress and was transferred to the diocese, which placed in it the theological lyceum.
To date, on the territory of the castle in 30 halls of the local history museum. Its collection includes more than a hundred thousand exhibits, including weapons, bronzes, books, musical instruments, etc.
