There are several embankments in Uzhgorod and all of them have different names — Kievskaya, Orthodox, Botanical, etc. However, the main and the most beautiful are considered to be the Independence and Studencheskaya embankments, which are connected by the famous Uzhgorod bridge — pedestrian stone bridge.
Uzhgorod stone bridge is one of the first bridges of the city. Until 1893 it was wooden, and after it was washed away by the then still turbulent waters of the Uzh River in the late XIX century, almost 100-meter stone and metal bridge was built in its place. In 1921 the first city bus was launched across this bridge, but today it has only pedestrian purpose. However, not quite — many people consider it a real wish-fulfiller: there is a belief that passing over it you should make your most cherished wish, and it will definitely come true. The bridge also plays a symbolic meaning for newlyweds: they believe that if they fix a lock on it and throw the keys to it into the Uzh River, the waters of the river will protect the marriage from misfortunes.
From the bridge you can admire the crystal clear waters of the Uzh, allowing due to its transparency to observe the underwater life in the river, quietly rippling and giving a sense of peace and tranquility. Many citizens like to feed the seagulls and fish — there are even trout in the Uz, which is listed in the Red Book.
The view from the Uzhgorod pedestrian bridge is another reason for its fame. From here you can enjoy magnificent panoramas of the embankments and the city. The bridge connects the Old and New parts of the city, with the former overlooking Theater Square and the latter overlooking Petefi Square.
Another of the attractions of Uzhgorod’s embankment is Lipovaya Alley, which stretches along both sides of the river for more than 2 kilometers. It is the longest linden alley in Europe. In spring and summer, those who are on the bridge can see a magnificent picture — coastal streets drowned in blossoming greenery, as if the city is enveloped in multicolored clouds. At the same time cherry trees, magnolias, Japanese quince, apple trees and

Many sights of Uzhgorod can also be seen from the pedestrian or, as it is also called, the Stone Bridge: the building of the former synagogue (Philharmonija), a fabulously ivy-covered 300-year-old ash tree near the cafe «Nad Uzh», a monument to the Hungarian revolutionary and poet Petőfi, and many others. The picturesque streets of the Old Town, climbing up the mountainside, curve around to reveal beautiful and unexpected views. On the right and left banks of the Už are scattered colorful houses and mansions built in the Austro-Hungarian and Czechoslovakian eras.
