Near Uzhgorod Castle is a unique and inimitable treasure trove of Transcarpathian cultural monuments — the Zakarpattya Museum of Folk Architecture and Life.
It is one of the first open-air museums in Uzhgorod Castle.
It is one of the first open-air museums in Ukraine. All its exhibits represent the structures of lowland and mountainous areas of Transcarpathia. Occupying an area of 3.5 hectares, the museum gives the impression of a real small village, which has a church and a school.
Each ethnographic monument reveals the ethnic traditions of the peoples living on the territory of Transcarpathia. The interiors of the huts convey the life of people who lived in different times.
In the museum you can get acquainted with the architecture of different nationalities. There is a Hutsul building from the village of Stebnyi, Rakhiv district, representing the architecture of the Hungarian ethnic group, and a Romanian building from Transcarpathia — a hut from the village of Srednyi Vodyanyi, Rakhiv district.
The first to greet the visitors of the museum is a hut from the village of Orekhovytsy — a folk dwelling, a typical settlement of the middle part of the river Uzh in the late XVIII century. It is a three-chambered structure consisting of a room, hay and storage room. 
The roof is covered with special straw sheaves. Among the interior stands out a stove, which served for cooking and heating.
One of the oldest monuments is a house from the village of Tibava, Svaliava district. It is a typical dwelling of the foothill regions of Zakarpattya.
While visiting ethnographic monuments, be sure to pay attention to the architecture of wooden temples of Transcarpathia. They cannot be completely attributed to any known style. Most of the temples were built by nameless masters. Interestingly, they were built with an axe, without using ptala and nails.
A characteristic representative of the temple wooden architecture is the Lemkovsky church of St. Michael the Archangel from the village of Shelestovo, Mukachevo district, built in 1777, and in 1974 it was moved to the Transcarpathian Museum of Folk Architecture and Life. Its architecture combines two styles — tent style (instead of a dome, the building ends with a hipped roof) and baroque. A bell tower rises next to the church. Nowadays it is a functioning church and services are held in it.
The Transcarpathian Museum of Folk Architecture and Life is open every day except Tuesday from 10.00 to 18.00.
