In a picturesque area at the foot of the mountain behind a high wrought iron fence and the green shadow of spreading trees hides one of the most precious treasures of Beregovo — Castle of Count Schönborn, built in the late XIX century. This majestic and romantic landmark has been attracting the attention of all visitors for more than a century.
The tall and slender building with a pointed tower gives the impression of a real medieval castle — it is the decoration of the city and its pride. The Schönborns, who owned Beregovo since the XVIII century, always chose only the best lands for their residences and laid out magnificent parks around their estates. The castle in the ancient Hungarian town was no exception. It was built for centuries: high powerful walls, romantic tower pointing to the sky — all in the best traditions of castle construction, as from fairy-tale pictures. Schönborn Castle was the summer residence of the family, where nobles came to have a rest, hunt, organize receptions and balls, but the XX century made its own adjustments in its fate.
In 1913 it was used as a winery, which in 1920 became the property of the Czechoslovak Union of Winemakers, and in 1954 the castle was «reclassified» into the Beregov Winery. However, this period in the history of Schönborn Castle was very significant: the winery produced wonderful wines, which became famous throughout the whole Union and made the winery and the historical building famous: «Trojanda Zakarpattya», «Promenistoe», «Beregovskoe». Today, for unknown reasons, the plant has practically stopped production, and access to the castle territory is closed.
The beauty and splendor of this attraction of Zakarpattya is certainly worthy of everyone’s attention. Now the Schönborn Castle can be admired only from afar, but even so it makes the brightest impression.
Many architectural attractions of Ukraine went through difficult periods, but these periods always ended. The love of the city residents, respect for its history will certainly lead to the fact that the beautiful Schönborn Castle, the famous Beregovsky winery will be reopened for all those wishing to admire the magnificent architecture of the ancient city and taste the fragrant Beregovsky wines.
