Numerous sights of Beregovo, like fragments of the rich past of the city are scattered here and there in its old part. Along with the ancient architecture of secular, civil purpose of great interest to the guests of Beregovo and various religious buildings, one of the most striking among which is considered the Church of the Reformers XVIII century.
The Church of the Reformers is the largest church in Beregovo, simultaneously accommodating 1100 parishioners. It is a decoration of one of the main squares — L. Koshuta, neighboring with no less famous building of the city court. It is these two buildings that prevail over the surrounding buildings, attracting the most attention of tourists.
The Reformed Church was erected in 1775 and immediately became an ornament of the ancient town. The building became famous for its unusual peculiarity: on the spires instead of crosses were installed roosters, which attracted attention and surprised everyone,
who saw the temple — the reformers were known for their peculiar approach to the interpretation of religion, which resulted in such an original architectural detail for a religious building.
The temple was built in neo-Gothic style, and it was rebuilt several times in its history. In 1918 it was almost completely burnt down, but in 1922-1924 restoration was carried out and it was restored in full compliance with the original appearance. Above the front entrance, as before, rises a massive four-tiered and four-sided tower with a bell tower and clock, the external decoration of the temple is characterized by modesty and restraint, which is characteristic of Reformed churches. Only the crenellated ornamentation and strict, straight contours of the church are painted in orange color, which against the background of white walls gives it a certain solemnity.
Reformatory Church gives the impression of a light, despite its size, airy building. The façade is decorated with two plaques: in memory of Balazs Rodan, the parish priest and founding father of the Reformation in Beregovo, who died a martyr’s death, and Bishop István Gelei Cato, who was the author of the first improved Hungarian grammar.
Today, in this site of Zakarpattya, as well as 200 years ago, services are held, during which the enchanting music of the organ of the Rieger brothers is played. The Church of the Reformers still adorns Koshut Square, attracts all visitors to the city and is loved and respected by its residents. In the amazing attractions of Ukraine — the town of Beregovo this is one of the most famous buildings, which is a perfect illustration of such a bright period in the history of religion as the Reformation movement.
