One of the most beautiful and luxurious buildings in Beregovo for a hundred years has been considered Casino Bereg, or as it is also called «Golden Peacock», «Golden Pava». It was here that the most significant and solemn events of the city took place, balls and evenings with the participation of famous Hungarian figures of culture and art. It is worth a visit if only to admire its luxurious interiors — it is one of the most important buildings in the city.
Today, the old building on the banks of the Werke River houses the city’s best restaurant, the Golden Pava, as well as a small hotel with a few rooms. Berehovo owes the appearance of the casino, which at that time had a completely different meaning than today, to Etvesh Tomasz — the second subjupan of Berezhsky komitat. He proposed to build a place in the town where literary evenings, balls, charity dinners and festive events could take place. This idea was supported by the whole city elite.
First such a place was organized in the large hall of the hotel «Oroslan», and already in 1890 a special building was built for it on the shore of the then lake, not the Werke Canal.
In 1911, the casino management announced a competition for the best project to rebuild the building, which was won by Dula Beshenski, an engineer from Mukachevo. The opening of the renovated building, luxurious and bright, took place in 1913. Those who saw the results of Beshenski’s work were struck by the beauty and splendor of the improved building: the facade was decorated with numerous miniatures and ornaments depicting a peacock, graceful architectural lines and semicircular shapes, every detail, every element of the two-storey building, topped with a romantic dark shingled roof with round turrets, was exquisitely decorated. The building combined elements of Art Nouveau and Art Nouveau, impressed and impresses everyone today with its smart exterior and luxurious interior.
The interiors of the Bereg Casino are richly decorated with frescoes, a bandstand in the form of a peacock’s tail was created, antique mirrors in voluminous heavy frames hang everywhere, bouquets made of peacock feathers and lamps made in the form of birds are arranged. Despite the difficult period that the building
had to endure from the 90s until 2003, when it was bought by a new owner, it has preserved the true aristocratic spirit of Zakarpattya in the pre-war period. With the exception of a decade-long period since its opening, it has continuously hosted landmark events for the city and its people, and after World War II the casino became the city’s best restaurant, named the «Golden Peacock». Maybe that’s why its atmosphere remains the same as it was a century ago — convivial and festive.
Having visited this luxurious attraction of Transcarpathia, guests of the city can enjoy not only its aesthetic beauty, but also try delicious dishes of Ukrainian and Hungarian cuisine at rather democratic prices, despite the fact that the restaurant is considered the most expensive in the city. In the ancient landmarks of Ukraine Beregovo, there is no better place to get acquainted with the national cuisines of the two countries.
