Every ancient city has its famous street. In Odessa — Deribasovskaya, in Mukachevo — Prospekt Mira, in Kiev — Khreshchatyk, and in magnificent Uzhgorod — it is Korzo Street. This is where all tourists should go first of all.
Korzo is the main among all the city streets keeper of its soul. Here the guests of the city can see ancient architectural ensembles, many of the most famous sights of the city above Uzh, and the atmosphere of the most ancient city of Transcarpathia is most vividly manifested: here in their free time Uzhgorod citizens leisurely stroll, drink in numerous coffee shops delicious hot chocolate and aromatic coffee, the smells of which fill the air with invigorating pleasant notes. Korzo reflects the coziness, leisureliness and quiet life of Uzhgorod residents, and, of course, the beauty of Uzhgorod, telling visitors how life goes on here.
Korzo Street was first mentioned in the late 17th century under the name Mostovaya. Then it was named in honor of F. Kazinci — a famous Hungarian writer, during the Soviet domination — in honor of Suvorov, but only the current name suits it as well as possible. The Italian word «corzo» translates as «place, street for walking, promenade», so the street was ordered to be named by the Neapolitan princes of Drugueta, who owned the city for almost four centuries. And they hit exactly the target, although they did not take into account a certain tautology. For many centuries, this is where Uzhgorod residents like to make their evening promenade.
Korzo is a pedestrian street. It starts from the Independence Embankment with the Theater Square and ends at Koryatovich Square almost at the foot of the castle mountain. The architectural ensemble of the street, which you can see today, was finally formed at the end of the XIX century. Walking along the ancient sidewalk past the benches and pretty flowerbeds standing here and there, to the right and left you can see only 2-3-storey houses, many of which have preserved stucco ornaments and beautiful architectural design in the style of Baroque, Constructivism and many other styles and their elements and motifs. At the beginning of the street and on the odd side of the street, the Austro-Hungarian flavor is pronounced, and the Czechoslovak period is also reflected in some buildings.
Walking along Korzo, one can see many famous sights of Uzhgorod: the colorful the Philharmonic Hall (former Synagogue) of the early 20th century on Teatralnaya Square, the imposing White Ship house of the 19th century and the mid-18th century Roman Catholic Church of St. George at the intersection with Voloshin Street, as well as other architectural treasures of the city.
After admiring the beautiful views and sights, you can always find a place to stop and catch your breath on Korzo Street. Here and there, as many years ago, small coffee shops are scattered here and there, many of them with terraces right on the street. There are also plenty of stores where you can buy interesting souvenirs. Corzo has long been not only a place to walk, but also a real shopping center, where you could find almost anything. Today nothing has changed, except that previously only aristocrats and high-ranking individuals were welcome here. Now anyone can walk along Korzo Street, a colorful landmark of Ukraine. Now Korzo Street is one of the most interesting places for guests of the city, where you can try delicious drinks brewed according to local traditions, see beautiful architectural ensembles and sights, and feel the true atmosphere of cozy, beautiful and always friendly Uzhgorod.
