Mukachevo’s various architectural sights include many old religious buildings belonging to various denominations. The Greek-Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, built in the early 19th century, is one of the most famous sights of the city, the pearl of Mukachevo, which makes up its rich architectural heritage.
The church was built in 1829-1859 years thanks to the initiative of an outstanding Transcarpathian scientist V. Dovgovich. It has become not only a spiritual home for Catholics, but also a worthy decoration of the city, one of the buildings that the residents of Mukachevo are rightly proud of and that its guests visit with interest.
Simple, characterized by strictness of forms and lines, their straightness and clarity of the church with a high tower-bell tower pointing upwards, crowned with an umbrella dome, as if emphasizes the power and authority of the church. Such a feature is inherent in many Catholic cathedrals: the building dominates, towering above the man, reminding him that he must obey the higher laws and dictates of the church. The exterior decoration of the Church of the Assumption is modest, discreet, but this simplicity is compensated by its monumentality, scale, and it is these features that make the building so impressive and memorable.
An interesting detail for the church is the clock installed on the bell tower above the front entrance.
This clock was made in Munich, to this day since the beginning of the XIX century they have been measuring the inexorable passage of time.
The architectural complex of the Dormition Church includes a sculpture of the Virgin Mary with the Child in her arms on the right front of the building. The Virgin, whose head is crowned with a halo, is depicted seated, on her right shoulder lies the Infant, she supports him with her right hand, and her left hand rests on his foot. This beautiful, peaceful sculpture has become a symbol of prosperity and goodness for the townspeople, bouquets of flowers always lie at her feet.
Slender, tall, unpretentious, but impressive due to its scale, the Church of the Assumption surrounded by a high wall of trees is one of the most interesting buildings and the attraction of Mukachevo, which always leaves only the most pleasant memories.
