Srednyane is a village in Transcarpathia, which is known primarily for making wine here. If you, for example, rest somewhere in the Transcarpathian sanatorium, let’s say, in Svalyava, you will be offered «a visit to wine cellars with wine tasting». When you are tasting, do not forget that there is something else interesting in the village, in particular, architecture.

Wine in Sredne has been produced since ancient times, there is a written mention in the beginning of the XV century about local vineyards.

Cellars in Srednee were dug by captive Turks in the middle of the XVI century and were called Turkish for a long time. It was a unique fortification.

The cellars had exits to the surface in safe places where people could be brought out. The two main cellars were connected by many corridors and had many branches. The length of the cellars was more than 4.5 kilometers.

Subsequently, the dungeons lost their direct purpose and turned into a wine storehouse.

Since the middle of the XVII century, the wines of Sredna were supplied to many monarchic courts of Europe.

In 1711 during the Prut campaign the Tsar of Russia Peter I passed through this territory. He liked the local wine so much that he bought part of the vineyards. The wines from the local cellars were supplied to St. Petersburg.

It should be noted that the local cellars are dug in tuff, a rock of volcanic origin. The peculiarity of this rock is that it has numerous capillaries through which fresh air constantly penetrates underground. The temperature of +12 ° C is constantly kept in the cellars. These are ideal conditions for aging wines.

In the Soviet times the Kirov collective farm was established here, on the basis of which the state farm «Serednyansky» was later created. The existing passages were restored and new ones were cleared. The most famous wine was «Trojanda Zakarpattia».

At the moment Serednyansky wine cellars has a length of 950 meters. Here, a local agro-firm produces 11 types of wine (so stated on the producer’s website).
