The residents of Mukachevo, one of the cultural centers of Transcarpathia, thought about founding their own theater in the late XIX century. In 1884, the «Community for the construction of the theater» was established, which was joined by 50 activists who urged the townspeople to help in the construction of the theater. The appearance of the drama theater, although in an ancient but small in population city — the result of the desire of its inhabitants, who contributed as much money as they could for the construction. After 12 years the necessary amount was collected, and in July 1896 the foundation of the theater was laid on the place of part of the buildings of the salt department and shopping rows. The construction was completed in 3 years — on October 28, 1899 the Mukachevo Drama Theatre was inaugurated.

The building was built in the Secession style — an Austrian variation of Art Nouveau — and became a perfect embodiment of it. «The highlight» of the two-story structure was the unusual solution of the front entrance, which was located under a large balcony with a balustrade, resting on simple rectangular legs. The balcony is domed by a cone-shaped roof, the front part of which is decorated with stucco — theatrical symbols of masks. Such a non-standard solution reflects the very essence of secession, refusing everything traditional, it made the theater a real architectural gem.

The first theatrical season in Mukachevo opened with the play «Polkovodets Suvorov», but ahead of it again waited a hard time: in 1963 it was almost closed,
joining the Uzhgorod Musical Drama Theater. However, after 2 years the troupe managed to achieve a return to Mukachevo as a Russian branch of the theater, and in 1972 it finally gained independence as the Transcarpathian Regional State Russian Drama Theater.
