Festival-Competition «Chervene vino» has been held in Mukachevo for more than 15 years (since 1996), gathering the best winemakers of the region and neighboring regions. The festival «Chervenoe vino» revives and strengthens the long-standing traditions of Zakarpattya winemakers. The festival is traditionally held on the feast of St. Basil on January 14.
Only 8 winemakers took part in the first wine festival in 1996, but in 2010 there were more than 100 winemakers.
During the three days of the festival it is attended by more than 20 thousand guests. At one time, ex-President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko and ex-President of Hungary László Sólyom, etc. visited the high festival.
In addition to the residents of Mukachevo, guests come to the festival not only from other regions of Ukraine, but also from abroad (Germany, Hungary, Austria, Poland, Romania). The geography of the participants of «Chervenogo vina» is also diverse: most of all winemakers come to the contest from Uzhgorod, Mukachevo, Beregov and Vinogradov regions. The winners in the categories «white» and «red wine» are awarded diplomas, as well as sheep, piglets, wine barrels and other gifts.
Traditionally, the festival is located on the central square of the city — Mira Square. For 3 days of the festival sell more than 3500 kg of meat and meat products and more than 17000 liters of wine. The guests of the festival are offered not only wine tasting, but also different national dishes — picnic, baniki, bograch-gulash, kremzliki, tokan, home-style potatoes, and, of course, kebab.
In addition to wine, at the festival-fair you can buy Transcarpathian cheeses and brynza, barrels, various wooden furniture and utensils, ironware and many souvenirs. During the festival, Mukachevo residents and guests can also listen to the performances of folklore groups of Transcarpathia, young carolers Mukachevo, watch the theatrical program «We could use a glass of wine» and the contest «Vertep».
