Object Group - Arpad Line

Location: Yasinya
How to Get There: From the village of Yasinya on foot or by hired transportation.

Arpad LineThe Arpad Line near the village of Jasinja is one of the famous memorial sites left from the Second World War, visited by all guests of the region. Walking along the picturesque mountain slopes, here you can see the evidence of one of the most tragic events of world history.

The Arpad Line was created by Hungarian troops in 1943-1944 to protect them from the advancing Red Army. Its total length is about 600 kilometers, from the Duklja Pass to the Jablunica Pass. The most fortified sections of the Line were established near the village of Jasinya, along with the Uzhgorod section.

The group of Arpad Line sites in Yasinya is spread over an area of several dozen kilometers. On the mountainsides here and there you can see the remains of anti-tank ditches and hollows — stone obstacles, pillboxes — long-term firing points, single mini-dots, small bunkers and shelters, trenches, fragments of hedges and barbed wire poles and much more. In total, there are more than 50 rock pillboxes and many other objects in the vicinity of Yasini.

Arpad Line Looking at the magnificent natural panoramas, it is hard to imagine that once upon a time this area was not as quiet and peaceful as it is now, but was the scene of battles, fought not for life but for death. Despite the reliable fortifications, the Hungarian troops failed to defend their positions: the Soviet troops, using the «Suvorov maneuver», bypassed the fortified line through the Svidovetsky ridge, as a result, the defenders lost most of their troops and retreated. Many years have passed since then, but the monuments left on the ground, like non-healing wounds, remind of the tragic events.

Today tourism in Ukraine on the memorial sites and objects of World War II attracts people not only from all over the country, but also from abroad. And the fragment of the Arpad Line near the village of Yasinya is considered one of the most visited sites. Here you can see both beautiful landscapes that inspire peace and touch the sad events of the past, feel the memory that local places keep about the turbulent, difficult years of the war.
