Svyatoslav's White Coast National Nature Park


Location: on the coast of the Black Sea, 135 km to the east-east of Skadovsk, in the Mykolayiv region, on the territory of the Kinburn peninsula.
How to Get There: From the settlements of the Black Sea coast of the Kherson region you need to get by water transport (excursion, hired or own transport). Also from Skadovsk you can get by own/hired transportation. For this you need to first drive 57 km northeast along the regional road P-57 ("Skadovsk - Golaya Prystan") in the direction of the city of Kherson to the town of Golaya Prystan, where you will need to turn left (south) and drive 6 km to the village of Novaya Zburievka, where, turning right, you will need to drive another 72 km through the village of Rybachie to Kinburn Spit. Further - by walking, which will not only strengthen your health, but also give you unforgettable impressions of the surrounding landscapes.

Kinburn SpitNational Natural Park «Svyatoslav’s White Coast», also known as Kinburn Spit, is another protected corner of nature in Mykolayiv region of Ukraine. Here is concentrated the rarest natural complex of the Lower Dnieper sands. Local landscapes consist of small areas of sandy steppes, notable saga forest groves, various wetlands, as well as within the park there are artificially created pine plantations. A total of 35223.15 hectares of land is assigned to the park.

It is easy to find the park «Svyatoslav’s White Coast»: its territory is located a little to the south of the city of Ochakov in Ochakov district of Nikolaev region. This is the expanse of the Kinburn Peninsula, its western part. In the north, the peninsula goes to the Dnieper Bug estuary, in the west — to the Black Sea, and in the south — to the Yagorlitsky Bay. flora of the National Natural Park In general, the name of the Kinburn Spit nature protection area was from the first years of its existence, the new name — «Svyatoslav’s Biloberezhye» the territory received relatively recently (in 2009) together with a higher status — National Park. Previously, the park belonged to the «landscape» — that’s how it was created in 1992. The very word combination «Kinburn Spit» has Turkic roots, it is formed from the words «hair» and «cape». As a result, the total length of the coastline of the Kinburn Spit is 71 kilometers. The spit is 40 kilometers long and 8-10 kilometers wide.

It turns out to be an incredible combination — one part of Kinburn spit is washed by sea waters, and the other — by river waters. Inside the Kinburn Peninsula there are about 300 lakes, some of which have salt water, and some of which have fresh water. Today the history keeps a lot of beautiful legends, which are somehow connected with the territory of Kinburn Spit. Earlier in its water area lay the most important sea trade route, in view of this territory of the peninsula was interesting to many people. Some legends help to explore the geography of the peninsula: some tell stories about the temple of Demeter, the goddess of agriculture and fertility, others about the grove of the moon goddess. Today, there is still a place among the local cultural traditions for Chumaca songs, which took root on the spit in the past centuries, when the Chumacas themselves often visited the peninsula to collect salt from its lakes.

Kinburn Spit is also remarkable for its centuries-old history. So, at the end of XV century Turks built their fortress Kinburndelightful iris of Kinburn spit, which already at the end of XVIII century was half defeated by the troops of A. V. Suvorov. The final transformation of the fortress into ruins occurred during the Crimean War, when the fortress left only stones soldiers of the Franco-British fleet.

Today all the activities of the park are aimed at the development of the following directions: preservation of biological and landscape diversity of Kinburn spit, organization of cultural and ecological recreation for the guests of the park, educational activities, as well as taking into account the needs of the local population. The administration of this park is located in the city of Ochakov.
