«The northern shores of Crimea have their own Sargasso Sea.
It is called Dzharylgach Bay.»
К. Paustovsky
Jarylgach Island, a sandy spit in the Black Sea between Crimea and Kherson region of Ukraine, is becoming more and more popular among tourists every year as a place where you can enjoy a beach vacation without the hustle and bustle and other disadvantages of large seaside resorts. Many tourists spending their vacations in Azure, Krasnoye, Primorsky and other nearby settlements, prefer to spend their time here for a number of the most wonderful reasons.
Kosa-island Dzharylgach — is 62 square kilometers of land between Dzharylgach Bay, washing it from the north, and the Black Sea, whose waters splash at its southern shores. Territorially it belongs to the Skadovsky district of the Kherson region of Ukraine. The length of this Black Sea landmark from west to east is 42 kilometers, and its maximum width is 4.8 kilometers. Dzharylgach is the second largest island of Ukraine by area and length after Tendrovskaya Spit.
However, it was not always accepted to divide them into two separate islands: the Greeks, who lived here in ancient times, considered Dzharylgach and Tendra as a single whole, calling these lands «Achilles Run».
It is believed that the territories of present-day Dzharylgach and Tendra in ancient times were the place where running sports competitions were held. Back then, thousands of years ago, the island, now covered with very scanty vegetation, was very green, with forests and meadows. Ptolemy and Herodotus testify to this. The Greeks loved this place so much that there were even myths concerning the history of its appearance. Thus, according to the ancient Greek legend, the island appeared because of the unhappy love of Achilles. He fell in love with one of the priestesses of the goddess Artemis, and she, having already taken a vow of celibacy, decided, having refused him, to kill herself in the sea. But Artemis decided to save the unfortunate girl and began to pour sand in front of her while she was trying to enter deeper into the sea: this is how a long strip of land going into the sea appeared.
It is known that people lived on Dzharylgacha at all times: archaeologists found here burial mounds of the Bronze Age, Scythian and Sarmatian burial grounds. Only in our time this island became uninhabited. According to the name, which comes from the Turkic language (it translates as «burnt trees»), there was vegetation on this island until the Middle Ages, which has almost disappeared by our days. This was apparently the reason for the gradual withdrawal of people from the island. However, the flora that has survived on the island is largely rare and valuable plants, listed in the Red Book of Ukraine. The same can be said about the animals living here, including here nest and winter very rare species of birds, also listed in the Red Book: pink pelican, bustard, black stork, red crane, eagle and others. All this, along with the unique landscapes of the island, representing a combination of steppes, sandy beaches and solonchaks, became the reason for the formation of the spit Dzharylgach National Nature Park in 2009.
Tourists visiting Jarylgach is a unique opportunity to admire the beauty of local nature, to see rare animals, including dolphins, often seen from its shores, to walk along informative and ecological trails. But not only that attracts tourists: for many years this island has been famous as a wonderful place for beach vacations. Gradually, the island (in some places) has developed an infrastructure: a pier has been built, to which tourists are brought from the mainland by water transport.
On Dzharylgacha you can swim, sunbathe, windsurf and, of course, mud treatment. Local muds are famous for their healing properties, relieving from many ailments, and the combination of mud procedures with swimming in the sea allows you to achieve maximum therapeutic effect.
Take pleasure in visiting such a wonderful place as Jarylgach — even just a walk will leave a deep trace in your memory due to the most positive emotions. Here you can visit an ancient lighthouse built in 1902, which is considered one of the sights of the Black Sea coast — it was built by one of Eiffel’s pupils and today it is called the local Eiffel Tower not only because of this, but because of the similarity of the structure with the famous world landmark. Perhaps after such a walk you will want to get to know Dzharylgach more closely, and it is easy to do it by stopping at vacationing in Lazurnoe, Skadovsk, Zheleznyj Port, or other nearby communities.
