Kamenka Waterfall is located on the river of the same name 110 kilometers from Lviv in Skolewsky district near the village of Dubina. The natural phenomenon itself belongs to the national natural park zone «Skolivskie Beskidy» and is rightfully included in the attractions of Skole. It is a popular object of recreational tourism.
There is a legend that it was here that Svyatopolk Okayanny’s brother Svyatoslav, the son of Prince Vladimir the Great, was killed with his daughter and his retinue in 1015. Legend says that at the attack Svyatopolk exclaimed: «Skole all!». That is how the name «Skole» appeared. According to other claims, the name Skole came from the «rocks» that surround the area. Another folk belief says that if a girl bathes in the water of the Kamenskoye waterfall early in the morning, she will marry well this year.
The waterfall consists of one 7-meter cascade, which is divided by a rocky ledge into two streams. Kamenskoye wonder of nature is protected by the state as a geological monument. The waterfall is not very steep, and it was formed in a picturesque break in the mountain range: water falls from massive blocks of stone. At the bottom, on the left bank there are huge rocks.
In the tourist season, which falls on the warm season, it is always very crowded. Excursion groups come to rest in Skole from the surrounding sanatoriums and Lviv. Therefore, there are always tents of local sellers of various souvenirs, berries and mushrooms. For visiting tourists near the waterfall there are tables where you can eat and drink herbal tea, and on the adjacent meadows are barbecues where everyone can cook their own kebabs. A little higher up there is an area where you can pitch a tent or even camp or play soccer. Kamenka waterfall is perfect for families with children, as there is a small wooden slide for children, and locals offer horseback riding for a reasonable fee.
Opposite the waterfall there is a sign that directs people to the Crane Lake, which is called Dead Lake by the locals. The lake is named after the very cold water with a high content of hydrogen sulfide, so there are no fish in it. The lake and the surrounding forest are mesmerizing with their beauty and primordiality. And around the lake there are numerous marshes. Many of the tourists who come to Kamenka on vacation, do not neglect the Klyuch Mountain, located near the waterfall. Mt Kliuch is another attraction of the Skolevskie Beskid National Park, as it is the highest peak of the national park and stands 927 meters above sea level. The mountain is famous for the fierce battles between the Russian troops and the Ukrainian Sichy Sagittarians. To commemorate these events, a memorial monument in the form of a cross and a rifle grave were erected on the top of the mountain.
