The life-size bronze chair monument is located in Gorsad on the famous Deribasovskaya Street. The sculpture is dedicated to Soviet writers Ilf and Petrov, natives of Odessa, and their famous novel The Twelve Chairs.
The opening of the monument took place in 1999, on April 1, the day when Odessa hosts the annual humorine. The author of the monument is Mikhail Reva, he also owns the sculptural composition «Tree of Love» and the fountain «Source» dedicated to the 200th anniversary of Odessa.
On the back of the chair are engraved phrases from the novel — «Foreign countries will help us», «Why opium for the people?», «Father of Russian democracy», «Here were Kisya and Osya», and on the seat of the chair you can see several coins.
The inscription on the bronze plaque embedded in the pedestal reads «Citizens of Odessa to Ilf and Petrov».
Guests of the city are very fond of being photographed on the chair, so often there are even queues to it.
For the short time of its existence the monument has already had time to be restored. In 2011 it was taken away from Deribassovskaya — due to the large number of tourists who sat on the chair to take pictures, often in groups, the chair’s legs cracked.
