National Natural Park «Beautiful Harbor» covers 10900 hectares of land on the Tarkhankutsky Peninsula — the westernmost point of the Crimea. It was named after the ancient mound «Kalos-Limen» — from the ancient Greek word combination and translates as «beautiful harbor». And, having been here, you realize that these words reflect what is revealed here as best as possible.
The territory of the reserve, created in December 2009 by the decree of the President of Ukraine V. Yushchenko, includes unique natural objects that have long attracted tourists with their beauty and considered part of the natural reserve fund of Crimea. These are tracts «Atlesh» (10 hectares) and «Balka Bolshoy Kastel» (20 hectares), landscape preserve «Dzhangulsky» (100 hectares), as well as hydrological natural monuments — aquatic complexes near Dzhangul and Cape Atlesh, an area of 180 hectares. Each of these objects is worthy of attention and a separate story, representing amazing wonders of nature, the fantasy of which here seems especially boundless. That is why many tourists, who appreciate the opportunity to see the most interesting natural objects of the Crimea, try to get to the «Beautiful Harbor».
Most of the territory of the reserve lies on the Tarkhankutskaya Upland, where the predominant flora of the steppe type — these are shrubby, stony deserted and sod-grass steppes. But there are also plants atypical for steppes, characteristic rather for the mountainous Crimea. Among the plants listed in the Red Book of Ukraine are wormwood of Dzevanovsky, Pallas’s cold, astragalus of Tarkhankutsk, hairy and Brauner’s wattle, Borza’s borage.
The steppe fauna is represented by insects, 20 species of which are listed in the Red Book, there are also rare reptiles — steppe viper and poloz, ornithofauna is represented by steppe cranes, bustards, crested cormorants, goatsuckers. For a long time until the 50s of the last century Tarkhankut was one of the few places where the monk seal was breeding. Unfortunately, due to the fact that for a long time these areas were not protected, some species of animals disappeared, but today, after the establishment of the reserve, the formerly inhabited saigas, marmots and kulans have been reintroduced here and are kept in a semi-free enclosure of 100 hectares.
Traveling through the park «Beautiful Harbor» and admiring ascetic and sometimes even harsh steppe landscapes, getting acquainted with the world of flora and fauna of the reserve, interesting and very peculiar, guests discover the world of wildlife of the Crimea, stunning and inspiring. Monumental landslide the Dzhangul tract is compared to Tibet in terms of energy, it impresses with its high banks and stone blocks of bizarre shapes, reminiscent of fairy-tale sculptures.
The cliffs of Big and Small Atlesh, which have long become the trademark of Tarkhankut, amaze with fantastic views — stone arches, canopies and niches, large grottoes, nostril rocks, tunnels piercing the capes, caves — all this is remembered by tourists for a long time, leaving the most vivid impressions. The bay of the Bolshoi Kastel gully impresses with its blue water, its mysterious grottoes, tunnels and underwater caves beckon.
