Mount PetrosZakarpattya is famous for many natural treasures. One of these breathtaking treasures are undoubtedly the mountain ranges: proud, staring upwards, of bizarre and austere shapes, steeped in legends and legends. But, of course, it is not only aesthetic pleasure that mountains give people.

Conquest of mountain peaks has long beckoned fans of active recreation, and the higher the mountains are, the more interesting and exciting the adventure becomes. One of the most interesting adventures in Transcarpathia is climbing Mount Petros — the third highest point in Ukraine.

Mount Petros with a height of 2020m is second only to Brebeneskula (2035m) and Hoverla (2061m), its summit goes far beyond the clouds, presenting a grandiose, monumental landscape. The name of this peak means «stone» in Romanian, but locals associate the name of the mountain with a very ancient legend.

Petros in winterWhen the earth was inhabited by fairy-tale, magical creatures, in a deep hole in the mountain near Petros lived the monster Fearpud, who terrified the inhabitants of the nearby villages, who were forced to constantly sacrifice animals to him. When there were no more animals left in the villages and Strahropud began to threaten the villagers, his brother and sister decided to outwit him. While the sister distracted the monster, her brother named Petrik built giant arrows with which he was able to kill Strachopud. However, not only the monster died, but also the sister on whom it fell. Her brother could not endure such grief and, running to the place where his sister died, died himself. Since then, this place is called Mount Bliznitsa, and the place from which Petrik shot at the monster is called Petrosom.

Climbing Mount Petros is an interesting and breathtaking adventure. It seems as if the nature surrounding the way to the top of the mountain has been preserved since those fabulous times: dense thickets of blueberries, rhododendron, juniper, spruce forests covering two thirds of the mountain, merge in front of the eye into mesmerizing pictures, leaving amazing, vivid memories of the beauty and majesty of the local nature. And closer to the top of Petros, the view opens up vast mountain meadows covered with bright multicolored flower carpet. In winter, climbing Petros is no less fascinating — snowy pictures amaze with light and purity. However, it can be done only by experienced tourists — frequent avalanches make the ascent dangerous for people unprepared for sports climbing.

Ruins of an ancient chapelOn the top of the mountain tourists made a 1.5-meter pyramid of stones, mysterious ruins of an ancient chapel and a large cross damaged by the elements. The panorama from Petros is breathtaking: in good weather you can clearly see the whole Montenegrin ridge up to the mountain Pop Ivan, in the west you can see Bliznitsa, in the southeast — the highest point of Ukraine Hoverla, you can see river valleys and villages at the foot of the mountains. The scenery from the top of Petros is one of the main reasons why tourist routes to this mountain are so popular.
