On October 1, 1787 the commander of the corps and the Kherson-Kinburn defensive section, General-Ansheff Suvorov A.V. won a significant victory over the Turkish landing on the Kinburn Spit.
The successful military operation laid the foundation for subsequent victories of the army and navy in the Russian-Turkish war of 1787-1791.
Since the end of XIX century the question of creating a monument to the commander was widely discussed. In 1903 near the military cathedral began leveling the terrain and preparing the site for the monument. The bronze figure of the commander was sculpted by the sculptor Eduards B.V. The pedestal was made of pink granite. In the fall of 1905 in the port of Odessa the sculpture was loaded on a special wooden platform for shipment to Ochakov. During the revolutionary events of this period the platform was burnt down in a fire, the sculpture made of metal melted. The author restored the sculpture at his own expense, fulfilling the terms of the previously concluded contract.
The commandant of the fortress Lieutenant-General Grigoriev on April 19, 1907 announced «Suvorov’s order» to improve the square and the surrounding area «so that both we and our followers could admire this corner of Ochakov». On the descent to the pier of the fish factory on the sides of the beam, the former ditch of the retrenchment, a park was laid out, trees, shrubs, flowers were planted, benches and swings were installed, a triumphal arch was built. Every Sunday a military brass band played on the equipped ground. Trofim Zaitsev served as the Kapellmeister of the band for more than 15 years. The park became a favorite recreation place for the citizens.
The monument was opened on the day of the 120th anniversary of the victory on October 1, 1907 at 10 am.
The existence of Monument to Suvorov in the city also has its own history. The monument is a two-meter figure of the commander on a pedestal of pink granite, consisting of three blocks of irregular chipping, set vertically.
Originally there was a fortress cannon and a bronze copy of the banner of the Fanagoria Grenadier Regiment. Lights were not installed due to lack of funds. In spring 1941 the fence was renewed, flowerbeds were laid out. During the years of German-Romanian occupation the banner was taken away, the spurs and sword were damaged.
In 1950 the restoration of the monument to Suvorov A.V. was carried out by the art workshops of the Union of Artists of Leningrad and Kiev trust «Stroymonument». In the course of works the bronze banner was restored, the sword and spurs were restored, all constituent parts were cleaned, two commemorative plaques with inscriptions were fixed: «Keep in memory the names of great men and be guided by them in campaigns and deeds» and «A good name should be every man’s. Personally, I saw this good name in the glory of my Fatherland, my successes had the exclusive purpose of its welfare. A.V. Suvorov.»
An anchor was placed at the foot of the monument, fenced on four sides with an anchor chain, the supports of which were the trunks of mortars, dug into the ground. Lights were installed. In the 80s of the last century trees and bushes were planted, lawns and flower beds were laid out, the wall above the beam was strengthened. Four columns with lamps on the model of the Odessa Opera and Ballet Theater were made by blacksmiths, craftsmen Ochakov father and son Buturlina I.F. and N.I.
The made figure, pedestal and architectural solution of the monument placement among professionals are considered the best among the monuments to the commander.
