The pyramidal peak, which majestically rises above the turquoise mirror of the sea of Gurzufskaya Bay, is simply impossible not to notice. It is Genevez-Kaya — a kind of detached from the whole string of Crimean mountains. Guidebooks describing the sights of Crimea, call this place one of the most picturesque corners of the Crimean peninsula, which is as if drawn from the pages of legends and ancient fairy tales.
The name of the rock Dzhenevez-Kaya is of Turkic origin. If we translate this toponym into our usual language, we will get «Genoese rock». However, let Dzhenevez-Kaya remains a Turkic young lady — there is something mysterious in her overseas name, something enchanting, alluring and majestic, just like herself. «I wonder why this rock was named Genoese?» — you ask. However, there is no mystery in it. Simply on this rock at one time there was a Genoese fortress, and therefore the stone ledge looking into the depths of the sea, decided to call a similar name.
At the beginning of the last century there were rumors, as if from Dzhenevez-Kaya to the most Adalar — twin rocks — a suspended road will be built. A little later, the rumors were confirmed by the real facts, because on the Genoese Rock the work began to boil — there cut a tunnel, the length of which reached fifteen meters. It is a pity, but this was the only stage passed on the way to the suspension road: the construction stopped there, and still has not moved from the dead point. Then the war — the First World War — interfered. What is preventing today — it is not known. Who knows, maybe it is us who are destined to complete the work of our ancestors …
Experienced travelers say, as if all architectural monuments and created by nature sights of Ukraine can be divided into two categories. The first give an opportunity to learn what is left on the dusty and charred pages of history, and the second inspire and spiritualize the one who sees them. The rock of Dzhenevez-Kaya is unique, because it combines both, which certainly gives fame to this miraculous attraction of Crimea.
There is a cozy little beach at the base of the rock, which is part of a miniature buchtochka, nicknamed Chekhovskaya by the people. Only for many decades the world’s most avid divers have been coming here to try their luck on the seabed. The lucky ones rise to the surface holding some artifact of the past. However, if you are looking at Dzhenevez-Kaya and your ankles are tickled by the turquoise water of the Black Sea, then you are already extremely lucky — not everyone can see such beauty!
