The legend of Adalary Rocks is known to everyone who was lucky enough to visit the International Children’s Camp «Artek». You bet, because the twin rocks — and that’s how they are called by the people — are located right in Gurzufskaya bay, literally two hundred and fifty meters from the shore. Actually, the name Adalary is of Turkish origin and translated into our native language means «islands». Long ago, the twin rocks were part of the sea coast, but time separated them from the shore, plunging the isthmus deep into the water.
«White rocks or Adalars are two equal-sized islands with a diameter of about thirty meters, and the distance between the rocks reaches forty meters,» is what you can read about the Adalars in school geography textbooks and guidebooks describing the sights of Crimea. But none of it is the same, it’s all dry, lean and utterly unflavorful. Adalars are not just rocks, which became a shelter for seabirds and a background for tourists’ photos.
This is a legend, which was written by Nature herself with her own hand, and afterwards captured the hand-made story in stone.
Adalars is a kind of Mecca for divers. In truth, professional divers are not after the flounder, which live in large numbers at depth near the base of the twin rocks. The trick is that the sandy seabed into which the cliffs cut is studded with fragments of pottery dating back to the XII-XVI centuries. Long ago, when the Adalars were still part of the coast and not lonely islands, ships with various cargoes used to dock here. To this day, lucky divers still find a variety of treasures from the past in the area of the «twins». Some even manage to bring to the surface entire amphorae!
In the early twentieth century rock Dzhenevez-Kaja and Adalary wanted to connect by means of a suspended cableway. By the way, even a tunnel was cut in the depths of Dzhenevez-Kaja for this purpose. However, the plans were not destined to come true: the dream of a cable car remained a dream.
There are a lot of legends and legends around the White Cliffs. One of them — the most ancient and magical — tells about twin brothers named Peter and George. The second — more like a true story — is about the restaurant «Venice», which used to be located right on the Adalars, but was destroyed by an earthquake. Tourists coming to Gurzuf with great pleasure listen to the stories of local natives about this attraction of Ukraine. Here every pebble, every turquoise wave and every centimeter of air conceal a fairy tale and keep the imprint of the past, which to this day attracts thousands of curious eyes.
