The diverse, rich and beautiful flora and fauna of Crimea is reflected in the Museum of Nature and Dendrozoopark, created on the basis of the management of Krymskiy State Nature Reserve.
A visit to the Museum of Nature and Dendrozoopark is a unique opportunity to get acquainted with the magnificent nature of Crimea, because not every person has the opportunity to travel the peninsula to see everything that is hidden by dense forests and majestic mountains, calm lakes and turbulent rivers, sunny steppes and ancient caves.
The Museum of Nature and the Dendrozoopark are located at the entrance to the Crimean Nature Reserve near Alushta. Like the reserve, the museum was established in 1923. Then it was decided to collect in one place typical and rare representatives of the flora and fauna of the Crimea. Until 1942, the museum was located in the former Kozmo-Damianovskij-monastery, which was destroyed by the Germans. And the restoration of the museum began in 1957 on the initiative of N.S. Khrushchev. In the current building the museum has been working since 1976, and the nearby dendrozoopark was created in 1982.
Over the years the museum has collected more than 1600 exhibits telling about the history of flora and fauna of the reserve, about the magnificent nature of the Crimea.
These are faunistic, floristic and geological collections, relief maps, by which it is easy to get an idea of the reserve and its inhabitants. Also the exposition of the museum familiarizes visitors with the evolution of the flora and classification of plants growing in the reserve and numbering about 1200 species — almost half of the entire flora of the Crimea. Here you can learn all about rare and endangered plant species and how the invaluable Crimean nature is protected.
A special pride of the museum are dioramas, thanks to which you can appreciate the beauty of pine, oak and beech forests, forestry Nikitskaya yaila,
where many rivers originate, and the air is saturated with wonderful healing aromas of plants growing here. One of the famous ornithologists — Englishman J.W.G. Matthews wrote about the museum and dioramas as follows: «I am delighted with the museum, its dioramas are among the best I have seen anywhere in the world».
The Department of Zoology of the Museum of Nature introduces the evolution of the animal world and the species of animals living in the reserve, there is also a magnificent collection of birds, the diorama «Lebyazhie Islands» surprises with its beauty.
Dendrozoopark is located next to the Museum of Nature.
In the aviaries you can see both typical and rare representatives of the Crimean fauna: noble deer, mouflon, roe deer and wild boar, black vultures, squirrels, «hunting» pheasants (hybrid species), eagles and many other inhabitants of the Crimea.
The Museum of Nature and Dendrozoopark, as well as the reserve on the basis of which they were created are the most important attractions of Alushta, as well as the Crimea and the whole Ukraine.
