The Town Hall occupies a special place among the architectural and historical sights of Kamyanets-Podilskyi — it is the most important ancient building of civil purpose, one of the most interesting buildings of the Old Town.
Ratusha is located in the heart of the Old Town — on the central square Polish Market, and this location is not accidental. For centuries it has been the place where the most important decisions were made and responsible negotiations were conducted. But, unfortunately, the events that took place in the Town Hall were not only positive: harsh medieval tortures took place in its cellars, sentences were pronounced from its balcony, and convicts were executed in public view next to it. Even today, the Town Hall is a place where you can see with your own eyes both cruel and solemn fragments of its history and the history of the entire city.
The construction of the Town Hall or the House of the Polish Magistrate began in the middle of the XIV century, when the King of Poland confirmed the right of the city to local self-government — Magdeburg Law, the exact date of erection is not known. At first a two-storey building was built with a high four-sided tower standing three meters away, and the unification of the building and the tower took place only after the fire in 1616 during the reconstruction.
Built in the 14th century, the building was rebuilt several times in the history of its existence due to fires. One reconstruction in the 18th century was supervised by the famous architect Jan de Witte, and a memorial plaque with an inscription and the old coat of arms of the city was placed above the entrance to the second floor of the building to commemorate it.
As befits a place where the legal and administrative authorities worked, the town hall building has a very representative appearance with an interestingly designed front entrance. From below, it is decorated with four arches, and on top of them there is an open gallery with a white stone balustrade, to which steps lead to the left and right sides. After numerous alterations, the original Gothic building has acquired Empire, Baroque and Renaissance features, making it not only an important historical site, but also an interesting piece of architecture.
From the moment of its construction, the town hall building fulfilled its direct purpose, then in 1870 it was transformed into a police department. During the war in 1941-1945 the outer walls of the building were damaged, but in the middle of the last century it was reconstructed again. In 1967 the building was handed over to the Historical Museum-Reserve, and its art department was located there. Since 2002 the first floor of the historic building has become a colorful cafe «Town Hall», where the owners of the institution have fully preserved the ancient vaulted ceilings and stone masonry. The atmosphere of the medieval building is carefully preserved here. The rest of the building still serves as a museum.
The museums of Kamyanets-Podilskyi Town Hall building are famous sights of Ukraine: they are the Museum of Magdeburg Law, arranged in 9 rooms of the second floor, museums of money and medieval court in three basement rooms. The first museum reconstructs the medieval magistrate’s sessions, and the exhibitions in the basement are both fascinating and horrifying. In the Museum of Money you can see the richest collection of coins from the first century to the analogs of the 1921 paper bills — bonn, and the exposition «The Court of Medieval Kamenets» reconstructs a true picture of medieval torture chambers with the help of executioner’s attributes and wax figures.
A visit to this attraction of Kamenets-Podolsky leaves vivid impressions, allows you to feel the spirit of the medieval city even more clearly, to touch its «life» and rich past.
